Which lens for New York

In the summer i'm off to New York to get married. I plan on taking my D5000, 18-70 and gorrillapod and after reading some of the previous posts about NY, I've decided to leave my 70-300VR at home cos I probably won't use it much.

The next lens on my shopping list was going to be the 35mm for low light shooting because it's an area i've struggled to get good pics from with my existing kit. However after reading other posts lots of people a recommending the sigma 10-20 for NY.

Would I be better off with my 18-70mm and a 35mm or should I take 18-70 and a Sigma 10-20mm.

Any advice would be appreciated because i'm going round in circles here.

I would take the 10-20mm for the skyscraper shots and the 35mm for people shots. A little biased here as the 35mm + D5000 is my everyday combo now. Probably bring flash and tripod as well as I'm not very optimistic that the f1.8 will help much when lighting is way too poor.
 
That's the thing, I currently have the 18-70 and the 70-300.

I'm hoping to save a bit more before I go and buy one new lens. The 35mm or the 10-20mm.

Afraid the budget won't stretch to two new lenses.

I used a 17-50 tamron and a 10-20 sigma on my trip there.

Its a great place to see!!!

Only wish I leart now to use the camera before I went, I hope to go back at some point and try again.
 
Having been to New York several times I would say without hesitation 'take a wide angle lens' - you'll miss so many shots if the widest you have is 18mm.

You need to be careful with regards to distortion and buildings 'leaning over' with a 10-20 but it is a city which cries out for wide angle shots. Not just for the skyscrapers but the fantastic views of Manhattan Island from across the Hudson but also for some fantastic indoor shots at places like Grand Central Station.

I imagine you can take some weird and wonderful shots of those skyscrapers with a 10-20!!

Looking like i'll probably have to look for a 10-20mm lens then.

Any other advice on equipment to take?

I'm a bit unsure on how to best backup my pics, whether to just take a load of memory cards or take a portable HDD and try to find a computer to use when i'm out there.

I can imagine i'll be taking quite a few pics.
 
Plenty of cards and a small ext Hard drive would be great. Cheap enough to buy too.
