which lens for nikon d3100?

Hi guys just wondering what size lens would you recomend for my nikon d3100? I mainly want it for wildlife ie deer,birds etc iv been looking at MPB site as i dont want something that is going to break the bank.

How much is not breaking the bank? I would think you'd need at least 300mm but probably more really, which starts getting expensive, I know, I've looked :)
 
well iv not set a limit really but as cheap as possible pretty much haha ill just have a wee scope around and see whats going.

My first thought would be the Nikon 70-300VR. Good mix of quality, reach and price.
Yes you can get cheaper 70-300's but the price refelects the quality.
You could get an old AF-D 300mm f/4 prime and 1.4 TC, but you wouldnt have autofocus.
Other options are a Sigma 120-400mm OS, or 50-500mm.
I think you'll need to spend a minimum of £300 to get anything half decent.
 
i think you should get the 70-300 VR like Tom mention. Use it till you know what you actually lacking, it seems you not too sure what you actually looking for.
 
Just out of interest, I notice a couple have recommended the 70-300mm, what the difference between that and the 55-300mm? The 55-300 is nearly half the price.
 
The optic on the 70-300 VR is better then the 55-300. The build quality is slight better as well, i.e metal mount vs plastic mount.
 
Go with the Tamron 70-300. Great lens for the price and not far off the Nikon.
