Which lens for studio portraits?

At the moment I'm just using the 18 - 55 kit lens, I've got a 50mm f1.8 thats great for outdoor portraits etc but sometimes its a little too close inside.

Any suggestions on an impovement?
 
Tamron 17-50 F2.8, though I have to admit even with a max distance indoors that I can use of 3 metres I never have a problem using the 50mm for upper torso and the 85mm for head and shoulders.
 
At the moment I have a little less room that than you Ian, I've also got three nephews to try and squeeze in a small space...

Loft conversion is looking more and more likely...when I win the lottery!
 
35 f/2 is pretty good, or 24 1.8 for even wider
