Hi looking for a cheap zoom lens

looking at :

Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 USM III

or

Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens

will they both auto focus on my 500d, will they work with a kenko teleconverter, will it keep autofocus with the tc.
 
So the choice is between horrible and poor. Forget about TC with them - they are already bad enough (i.e. waste of money)

You should really look for 70-200mm f/4L or 55-250mm IS if there is no cash to spend.

how much are these lens??

will the tc work with them??
 
I see both lenses frequently in my work as they have been bundled with canon DSLRs by Jessops etc and they are superb...... no I'm kidding, they're both a waste of money, Adequate in good light maybe but not a good buy.

Buy a Canon 55-250mm with image stabiliser as suggested above. You won't regret it.
 
I would seriously avoid buying either of those, instead look for a 70-200mm f/4 L or if you need the extra length try a 70-300mm IS USM. Both are cracking lens and can be picked up second hand easily.

All the other (fairly accurate) comments above aside, they won't work with a TC on a 500D.

1.4x TC = 1 stop of light loss. It might work at the short end, but as soon as you start to zoom, you'll drop below the f/5.6 aperture threshold for being able to use autofocus on a 500D.

Your options then are

- buy a 1-series body :)
- buy a lens with constant f/4 or faster maximum aperture, such as the 70-200mm f/4L.*
- don't use a teleconverter


* if you want to use a 2x TC, then that's two stops of light loss, so you'd need to start out with an f/2.8 lens to keep AF.

Depends what you mean by "cheap". No "L" lens is cheap, even used; even on ebay. The 55-250mm is great value and good quality

Agreed... failing that the 70-300IS is better than the mentioned, although more expensive than the 55-250IS..

I personally had the 55-250 and got good results with it.
