which lens next??

Hi all,

I'm after a little advice if you don't mind :)

I have done lots of reading on which lens i should go for next and the more i read the more unsure i become!!

I'm new to dslr's, have had an eos500d for about a month now, an am loving it.

Trouble is i have become very bored very quickly with the 18-55mm kit lens so am looking for an upgrade.

I don't have much money to throw at this (unless i part company with my tz7 which is on the cards :lol:) so am looking at budget lenses.

I settled on the canon 55-250mm after reading some good reviews but every now and then i find someone saying it;s fit for the bin (and similar comments) and nothing else. I've also looked at the 75-300 too, but again find very mixed reviews.

I don't need (and can't afford) L glass, but want to be able to take the best phot's for the least money (don't we all!!)

I've heard mixed reviews about tamron lenses - general consensus being steer clear of cheap tamrons!

My main photo's will be portratits of the kids with some wildlife and nature stuff.

Any thoughts or guidance will be much appreciated

are you finding the 18-55mm limiting in terms of focal length? if so then i would recommend a canon 55-250mm telephoto lens for that extra reach. also i can recommend a canon 50mm f1.8 that pretty much anyone who owns one will rave about how good it is and kerso sells them on here for an amazingly cheap £70! theres no catch to it apart from its build quality is all plastic but IQ can compete with more expensive lenses and in most cases win.
 
forgot to add that the 50mm is a perfect lens for portraits and the 55-250mm is quite a good lens for wildlife except it will have trouble capturing birds and you might end up needing a longer lens as do most birders.

I think i'm pretty much decided to go with a nifty fifty and a 55-250mm

just got to get paid now....... c'mon 10th march :)
 
Hi,

Tamron do a small sensor only 55-200mm f4-5.6 which gets rave reviews and costs £70. It might be worth looking into.

Def go for the 55-250 IS over the 75-300 lens, the 55-250IS is a cracker of a lens and very well regarded and fitting in well with your 18-55IS lens.

You say you've bocome bored with the 18-55IS lens - is it just short in focal length ??
 
Yes, some say that it's "best in class" which is amazing considering it's price.
