Which lens next?

I currently have a canon 450d which I love. It came with the 18-55mm IS kit lens and since I have bought a 75-300mm f4-5.6.

Is there another lens I could get that would be useful? I'm mostly doing landscape and nature stuff but I would like to start a bit of portrait and people stuff as well as try a few night shots such as car light trails.

My budget is a couple hundred quid and don't mind buying second hand.

100mm macro?
Obviously there's macro but it also makes a good portrait lens for head shots

I'm presuming you have a tripod, if not then get one as it'd be hard doing car trails without one

The 85mm is wonderful for portraits on both crop sensor and full frame
 
Yes I have a tripod. Made sure of that one!

I've been told that the 85mm prime is a good portrait lens before, just wanted to see if I was recommended again.

Any need for a 50mm f1.8 for what Ive described?

The 50mm is actually a great lens for portraits on crop sensor delivering a wider field of view. The 50mm & 85mm combo is fantastic for any camera.
 
Agreed with everyone else too - I have the 50mm (1.8), 85mm and the 100mm - if its just a straight portrait I would say the 85mm is the best, but I noted the nature part and thought of macro too.

Before choosing a prime though I would try the lengths out with the lenses you have and see which length fits your style best.
 
What's the best way of trying them out?
 
Get the lenses you have and set them to the correct length, ie 50, 85, 100 and see if you like the range, its tempting to just use the zoom but you don;t get that option with a prime so resist :)

All the responses so far have duplicated (or nearly) one of the lenses you have already. The way I see it you can go for a focal length you already have but with a larger aperture (50mm f1.8 - the so called nifty 50) *or* get a ultra wide angle, have a look at the sigma 10-22mm.

Either will add something new to your oprions - but it's you call as to which way you want to go...
 
I think i will go with a nifty fifty - there must be a reason everybody loves them! not only that but as you say it will give me the ability to shoot with a larger aperture so will come in handy if low light is an issue.
