which is the best lens for general walk about CANON24-105f4IS L OR CANON17-55F2.8 IS FOR THE 50D please :shrug:
 
I went for the 24-105, mainly for the extra length, but it really does depend on what you mostly shoot. I can see the constant 2.8 aperture being very attractive to a lot of people.

depends on what you shoot, what do you have at the moment? how does it restrict in terms of focal range an aperture?
 
like i said shots of anything that catches my eye while out and about a every day lens
 
I use the 24-105mm on my 40D as a walk about lens, vey pleased with it so far it is very rarely off the camera these days. You could hire one first or if you bought one at the right price you'd get most of your money back if you didn't like it anyway.
 
The problem is gary, there are certain questions you have to ask your self between these two excellent lenses.

1. If I go for the 18-55 I'm going to lose the 55-105 at the long end.

2. If I go for the 24-105 I'm going to lose the 18-24 at the wide end, and when your getting to the wide end of lenses, 6mm IS quite a lot.

3. Do I need constant 2.8? in my opinion, for a general walkabout lens, probably not.

4. Could I live with F4 as being my largest aperture, again, in my opinion, for a general walkabout lens, probably.

5. 18-55 £800, 24-105 £950 (Ball park from Warehouse Express). is the 24-105 worth £150 more? For an L series lens, maybe, but the 18-55 has been talked about as the BEST non L lens.

As I said before, these are both excellent lenses, and, in my opinion, I don't think you'll go far wrong with either, but, there are some decisions, by knowing what type of photography you enjoy, only you can make.
 
i think the 17-55 f2.8 is the same quality, but since it cropped cameras only, they refuse to put it in there professional range. but it just a guess.

as for a good walkabout, when you go out now, what do you use as a walkabout? how are you finding it restricting?

once you can answer how it is restricting you will be closer to knowing which would be best.

they are both excellent lenses, but equally have there own positives and negatives. and since looking at the lenses you have, you should be somewhere in knowing where you are being limited.

At the end of the day Gary, you have to make the decision yourself.
 
Kit lens is the ideal walkabout focal length range for most people. That's around 18-55mm on a crop. 24-105 is the kit lens on a full frame 5D2.

It doesn't get any better than the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, which is my choice.
 
i don't want to be dragging this out but i have the canon EFS 18-55 is kit lens and was thinking if i went for the EFS 17-55 f2.8 or the 24-105f4 is i was up grading my gear (and hopefully get a better image to boot ) all things been equal :shrug: i would lean towards the 24-105 in case i ever changed the body
 
so, when you go out with the 18-55 on the camera, do you find that it is too short, do you use all the focal range do you use the 18mm end more than the 50mm. do you take many shots inside without flash...

hi fletch thanks for trying to help me yes i use all lengths of the 18-55 i don't use the camera much at all in doors mainly out and about iam just trying to get the best out of my 50d and up grade too! I take a lot of landscape shots with it and iam on my knees shooting at the flowers too will the better glass get me a better image :shrug: all things been equal
 
I got the 24..105 with my 5D but once I'd used it on a crop body I realised it was the wrong lens for me - the effective ~170mm length I found really useful hence why I've changed it for a 70..200 instead.

Also the IS on the 24..105 really good and completely silent, on my copy anyway.

Only realy down side of it is the zoom spacing, it goes from 24..50mm much too quickly.

the image should be sharper and the colours better. with what you said bout landscapes etc, i would probably go for the 17-55, as wide angle is what most people look for for the landscapes.

the 24-105 sounds like it will be too wide really for your needs.

have you thought bout hiring both lenses to see the differences and trying the weights?
stewartR is a member here and he has a website doing this sort of thing. you can then actually see the difference in the results:thumbs:
 
thanks everyone for your help and comments i think iam going to go with the 17-55 f2.8 Ive been out today with my efs18-55is and nearly every pic was shot at the 18mm end. I always thought i used more of the long end thanks again and don't think its over with the questions:naughty::naughty::naughty::thumbs:
 
I realise you appear to have made your decision, but one last factor to think about is whether you are ever going to get a full frame body. If you are then that might lean you towards the 24-105 (which incidentally is my walkabout lens)
 
Frankly I think whatever lens you purchase I think you'll be very happy with the photos you're getting, but have a niggling doubt about your choice (as I have in another post about my choice of 70-200!)
Or maybe that's just the way that I work!
