Going for mates bday meal tonight so thought it would be the perfect chance to take some nice pictures but I dont want to keep having to changes lenses from my kit lens to my fixed focal 50mm which I love!

So whats the done thing... stick to zoom lens unless or just used the fixed focal and crop?

I'm guessing that the 50 has a wider aperture than one of your zooms (in fact, I've not heard of an f/1.7 zoom), so I'd suggest using that. Most often, the wider aperture will be your friend, especially given the usual low lighting experienced in most restaurants. If you find the single focal length to be limiting, don't forget to get in close. It usually works.

I vote for the 50mm too, you may be limited by the fixed focal length but the aperture will make life easier in difficult light.

Thanks, think I will stick with the 50mm and take the kit lens with me just in case

50mm should be fine round a table. I have used it and there was plenty of space in the frame.
