Yes
well a new Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

or

a used Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG APO HSM,

both Nikon fit and to be used on a D40???

I really don't know what to do, I do a lot of nature and bird photography and these 2 look the best for the money I have available, if anyone could suggest a better lens please let me know, if not which one would preform better???

Well 500mm is a good focal length for birds and I've seen some excellent results from these Sigma lenses. I don't have a clue about these lenses but my gut feeling would be to go for the stabilised lens.
 
As Cedric says, the stabilised lens. There is not much between the two optically (I have used both) but the OS in the 150-500 is very, very good indeed. The newer 50-500 OS is supposed to be optically better but it's quite a lot more expensive.
 
maybe you could help me with this as well, I was reading the spec and reviews of the 150-500 and is said that the minimum focus distance is 220cm, will this be at 500 or will this be at 150???

On both my 120-300 and 300-800, the minimum focus distance increases as you zoom to a longer focal length. So I would assume that it is the minimum focal range they have quoted.

Don`t hold me to that though.

Ade is probably actually right but I can't actually remember any time where I came up against the minimum focal distance for this lens anyways, its designed for shooting things a few meters away at least!
 
I've certainly used the 150-500 at around 3m @ 500mm.

Surprisingly, you need to be that close to fill the frame with a small bird.
