Which lens would you choose?

I will be a guest at a friends wedding soon and I want to give them an album of images from the day and evening, something a bit personal than a toaster as a gift. :D

They have an official photographer for the day but not the evening as far as I know.

I am trying to decide on which of the following three to hire.

Nikon AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF-ED
Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED
Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 G IF-ED VR

What I want to do in order of importance.

Video the speeches.
Have a selection of images from the evening function.
Images from the ceremony.

So based on that, which lens would you all go for?
 
As above - what camera are you using ? - What lenses do you already have ? - Are you indoors or outdoors ?

With an official photographer already in place, I guess you have the luxury of being able to shoot what you want or at least shoot your own style.

Is this a nice surprise or do they know you're doing this ?

Check what they've already arranged with the pro and aim to suplement the norm / yawn stuff they know they're already getting.

Candids may not be planned and they're what I'd have loved to have more of at my wedding..

If I only had the info from your original post - 24-70mm f/2.8 would be my choice.

I think I would just take my olympus XZ-1
 
A great idea but I would say ignore duplicating things the official tog will do better for example the ceremony where they will be standing up and moving around while you are seated in rows.

Try and think of things the pro won't have covered in such detail.

I did something similar for a friend (a slideshow of images) from the end of dinner till the end of the night and I did it all with a 50mm f1.4 and a flash.

My friend had asked me to do this otherwise I wouldn't usually take my slr to a wedding!
 
I have the following.

D50
D7100
SB 600
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G
I also have the standard kit lenses from both cameras.

The images will be a surprise I guess I will take a mixture of indoor and outdoor images.

I also want to video the speeches.

17-55 then. With the 50 on the other body.
 
Another one for the 17-55mm on the D7100,and keep the 50mm on the D50,if the light get a bit low indoors i would also try the 50mm on the D7100 which has the better high ISO :)
 
I can't imagine taking 2 dslr's to a wedding that I've been invited to as a guest...

If you're definately set on it I would take the 7100 and the 50mm and leave the other body and forget hiring lenses.
 
That's a really nice present but your friend is paying a lot of money for you to be there and share a special day. Don't spend it looking through a lens! enjoy the day, speak to people you wouldn't normally speak to and have fun
