Hi I'm using a 450D with the 18-55 IS kit lens, looking to add to it so which would be better the Canon EF-S 55-250 4.5-6 IS or the Tamron AF 28-300 F3.5-6.3 XR DI IF Macro.

Not a huge budget so these are the two i've sorted decided on unless anyones got other ideas.

Cheers

I think you'd be better off with the Canon EF-S 55-250 4.5-6 IS by the sounds of it and Tamron have a reputation for having sharpness and general image quality issues with "super zooms" like the 28-300 whereas with Canon you know you'll be sticking with quality ;) Might be worth going into a high street store and trying out both of them on your camera though and that might help make your mind up :)

You must be happy enough with the kit lens or you would be upgrading. So on that basis I would go for the Canon 55-250mm, the feed back says it gives good results and is similar quality to the kit lens so you will know what to expect, It seems to be a very popular combination. Any softness can be sorted out with the Canon software which wont recognise the Tamron lens. Easy choice for me!

What do you want to use it for? wildlife/motorsport/general longer lens/macro (tamron)

Just general longer lens really , some wildlife , bit of landscape and possibly the macro end but something to cover the range.

I can get a Tamron a good price but i do like the Canon so can't really make my mind up... ggrrr

Both lenses aren't ideal, but it depends on your expectations of what you want to achieve. Both lenses have there yes camp and no camp. Sort of lenses that try to do everything, but don't really achieve it. If I was going for a walkaround general zoom, then I would go for the 70-200mm f4, light, 10x better optics than either of these, fast focusing, lightweight and a real gem of a lens, a step down is the 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM which is also a good contender.

For Macro, yes the tamron has a more usable 49cm minimum focal distance, but personally I would rather go for a dedicated macro lens rather than something that is a wolf in sheep's clothing if you understand what I mean.

At the end of the day, the canon is the slightly faster lens (which will make a difference), the tamron has that slightly extra reach. Both will give you good results when the conditions (light) are right and budget is the main driving factor.

Hi Pete

Had a look at the 70-200 and the 70-300 but unfortunatley both (new ones)are out of the range of funds available , but thanks for the info it was interesting reading up on the alternatives.

For the money, nothing comes close to the 55-250 IMHO. Sharp, decently made, good range, good IS, and actually pretty damn cheap :)

The 55-250 IS lens is a cracker, esp for the price, personally, if you do like the Canon, then that's the one you need to get, if you get the Tamron because it's a good price, are you going to be happy with it -> is it possible for you to try these 2 lenses side by side ??

I have the 55-250 IS and I think that it is a fabolous lens. I would definitely go for that, since when I tested out the Tamron in a high street Jessops - it was EXTREMALY slow Auto focusing and the sharpness was not top tips either...

Thanx one and all looks like it's going to be a 55-250 then ,seems to be a favourite lens for the cash with lots of people, just gotta decide where to buy it from as per Thread "Buying Equipment"

If you want to do macro with this lens, get the Raynox DCR-250 to go with it! Very good combo!

Have a look at THIS
