i am buying my first DSLR next week a Nikon D300s i want to buy a couple of lenses for it but strugling to work out the best ones ... the nikkor 18-200 3.5-5.6 VR11 seems a good one or the the 16-85 3.5-5.6 VR wouldnt buy both these together of course ... but going to get one of these plus another lens to supliment one of these.

can someone recommend 2 good lenses to go with the 300s .. i cant afford a f2.8 at the momment i wish!!
 
You do realise your talking about putting entry level lenses on a pro-sumer camera?

I would suggest getting a third party lens if money is tight, at least you can get F2.8 and a good sharp lens, so its worth looking at the Tamron 17-50 or 28-75, both F2.8 and both reasonably cheap.

If your going to do portraits, grab the Nikkor 50mm F1.8, pocket money price, but great performance.

Then save, save, save for the decent Nikkors to go with it.

Remember a camera is only as good as the lens you put on it, one like yours with a cheap, slow and slightly soft lens will end up producing disappointing photographs
 
What are you going to shoot? It is worth looking at second hand glass as you maybe able to get one decent lens instead of 2 average lenses, it may be worth looking for a nikkor 17-55 f2.8 a stunning lens on the d300s, or as Ian said, look at 3rd party lenses
 
thanks for the advice chaps thats the kind of things i needed !! i thought the 18-200 was a good lens ? i may be able to get hold of a nikkor 12-24 f4 soon as well that seems a decent lens. what about the sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO that sround £5-600 cant afford a nikkor 70-200 ...i wish ! i wnat a long zoom as i do landscape
 
I have the 70-200 sigma and itis my most used lens. You will get some people say sigma are not worth bothering with, TBH I have 3 sigma lenses and love them all.
 
It is also worth keeping an eye open for a later nikon 80-200, this are stunning lenses but may well be a little more than the sigma.
 
just bought the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 to put on my D90

£599 and theres a three year warranty offer on at the moment

Calling the 18-200 an entry level lens is, IMHO, a little harsh. It's not incredibly fast but the VR makes up for that in most instances - unless, of course, you're specifically looking for short DoF. It's an ideal general purpose lens - ideal for when you don't want to be lugging around a bagfull of equipment.

Nice review here of the earlier version - very little difference between this and the newer version.

I think it's very easy to get hung up on gear - buy what's affordable and make the most of it.
 
been looking at the tamron 70-200mm f2.8 cheapest is at about £580..anyone rate this lens ?
