Which lens is best for motor sport??

both will produce the same pictures. depends if you want the 100-400 range.. which one is more expensive?

Im looking at renting them to see how it goes 1st

Can't comment on motorsport (though I would expect you may need the shorter range at times, making the 100-400 a better choice?) specifically but the general differences between the two are that the 400 prime has better image quality at 400mm and focus speed (though the 100-400 isn't bad in either of those areas, the 400 is better), whereas the 100-400 is much more flexible, having the zoom and IS. The 400 prime is also a little lighter, but the 100-400 packs up smaller at 100mm.

I've noticed most motor-sport shooters on here seem to use zooms or pair a long prime with a shorter zoom (for example a 70-200).

Although I haven't used the 100-400mm, I'll just say that the 400mm prime is incredibly sharp and focuses very quickly. Obviously IS is one minus - will you be shooting tripod mounted, and will it mostly be in or outdoors?
