looking for some guidance on what to buy ??
nikon 85 1.8
105 2.8
24-120 4.0

mainly for portraits of grandchild but not very happy with first 2 lenses as fixed focal length but i read produce excellent results , but the 24-120 will give me more flexibility.iv'e read the new 24-120 gives really good results.
dont want any 3rd party lenses
anyone got any ideas ?? :thinking:

The 105VR is great. As is the 85...

Never used the 24-120.
Im selling my 105 if that makes any diference!

The first two (the primes) will give you excellent image quality, especially the 105/2.8VR.

The zoom will give you flexibility, which may be preferable with a rapidly moving target, have seen good reports on the optics, but not as good as the two primes, but you would need to really pixel peep to see the difference.

Personally I would use the 17-55 / 2.8 on the D300 for those types of shots, it is a stop faster than the 24-120.

A tough call as the 24-120 is a useful one lens range
 
I'd personally opt for the 85 f1.8 as on a cropped body it's equivalent to around 120mm. The 105 although an excellent lens might not be great if taking indoor portraits as you might end up filling the frame too much and not being able to move far enough back for a head and shoulders shot?

I looked at your "camera bag" you've an 18~200, why not compare the image on that at both 85mm and 105 to see if you understand what I mean.

Also since you've got that zoom already a 24~120 would seem to be a little bit of a waste of money unless in the future your thinking of going full frame
 
I have a 105mm d micro nikkor... lovely lens. Not what I'd call a portrait lens - but you can do some at a longer distance.

Have a look at the 35mm f1.8 nikon - I was going to suggest the sigma 30mm f1.4, but as you've posted that you'd not like third party...

Also have the 50mm f1.4 d - but I personally find myself needing to move back a bit.

For even further away shots the 85mm would be good.

The 105 probably doubles as a macro (unless its the dc version) so you almost get two for the price of one.

Check on flickr for the types of shots you can get (for the lenses I have follow the link in my sig, then on the right hand side there is a link for sets. Follow this and look for the 105/50mm/30mm to see what I managed to get with them).
