Which lens

I'm looking at up-grading my kit lens and have been looking at the Tamron 17-50 or the Sigma 17-70 both are F2.8, which would you go for?

The Sigma isn't a constant f/2.8 which means as soon as you move the zoom ring it goes towards f/4+.

The Tamron is a constant f/2.8 all the way through and is sharper.

I'd go for the Tamron. Great lens.

Hmmm. Most would disagree with this! Its fine and sharp at f/2.8. Maybe yours is a bad copy?
 
I didn't realise that about the siggy Jim, thanks. Just done a quick review on google and Tamron comes out the winner IMO so my mind is made up.

Never used a VC model, but reports are common that it's not as sharp as the non VC model, which I did have and found acceptably sharp wide open.

I have heard this but, would I really notice the difference that much on my old 20D?
 
As I say I have never used the VC model, but if it is softer then yes, you would definitely notice it - like all bodies the 20D can (still) take excellent, sharp images with the right lens on it.
 
Thank you. Yes she can still take pin sharp shots with the 50mm 1.8 on so the non VC version it is.

My brother has it and it is very soft. Turns fur to mush at 2.8! As many other comments have stated, perhaps there is a difference between the VC and non VC lenses.

Indeed there is, I was referring to the non VC variant which is sharper than the VC.

I'm sure the tamron vc can be switched off!!!
 
VC can be switched off. Switch on side next to AF/MF switch

VC model is sharp, Early ones were soft but current ones are much sharper. There not much diffrance between the VC copy I had and my current canon 17-55 IS in regard to sharpness.

Like all lens there are good and bad copies.
