Which lens?

Yes
I've just got a new home studio kit sorted but need a better lens.

I've got the kit lens 18-55
A 50mm manual focus only
And a 70-300

The problem is the kit lens doesn't always get the best focus, I don't always get focus spot on with the 50mm and the tele is to long to use indoors unless I just want to do head shots.

So which lens for a Nikon D3100 would be best for portraits of children/family shots. So something I can fit small groups if needed from a relatively short distance in the front room.

I'm thinking maybe a 35mm, but wasn't sure if a short tele would be better.

Thanks
Dan

Budget?

When you use the kit lens for this type of shot, what length is the most often used?

Budget is what ever her in doors lets me spend on it haha. So it is entirely mood dependant.

I'd say between £200-£300 max.

So far i've only done a few shots of the misses and my little lad and they've been quite close at 40-55mm mainly because i'm waiting for my proper background to arrive, so just using an old blanket at the moment so have to get in close as its not very wide.
