Which Lens?

Morning all, for many years I have used Sony a mount cameras and various lenses. Before my photographic days are over, I wanted to get a full frame and bought a used Sony a7rii and a recommended a to e convertor which has done a reasonable job. I now want to buy an e mount lens and torn between the new Sony f5-6.8, 100-400mm lens or a used Tamron f5-6.7, 150-500. Any advice appreciated.

My 2 cents...
The A7Rii is getting a bit long in the tooth, terrible battery life and just the single card slot.
I would suggest trading in for an A7Riii or A7iii or A7 iv.
Go for a used Sigma 100-400mm or even the Tamron 70-300mm and use the money saved to go towards the body.
If wildlife is your main thing also consider the Sony A6700 paired with the 70-350mm lens.

Whilst I agree it's getting a bit long in the tooth it depends on the OP's priorites. They migh not need all the bells and whistles and are just concerned with image quality, and there's nothing wrong with the image quality of the A7RII

This depends where you live and what you want to shoot?

With the new Sony 'only' being f8, if you love in the UK where light isn't always great you're going to get noisy images if you're shooting wildlife that requires a fast shutter speed. In this case the Tamron offers a bit of an advantage, not to mention the extra reach.

The sigma 100-400mm mentioned above is a good shout, marginally brigher than the Tamron at f6.3, however at the sacrifice of 100mm.

You then have the Sony 100-400mm GM, it's in a much higher price bracket but it's a setllar lens, and AF is top notch.

What I don't know is how well the AF works on third party lenses and the older Sony bodies, maybe someone with the A7RII can comment?

It might be worth asking this thread to be merged with the Sony thread, you're more likely to get more responses there.

I wouldn't say it's terrible battery life. I've had my A7 on a tripod before shooting night sky timelapse photos. Continuous 13 second images for several hours.

If wildlife is a genre of interest, I personally would pick the camera with the better AF over the camera with better battery life.

I had an A7 for over 7 years and very rarely needed a second battery. Get 2 batteries and that'll probably be enough.

Sounds better than my A1, I could go through 3 batteries at a motorsport event

Whilst battery life is not what it might be I`m ok with changing batteries. I have more than I can count. Many thank for input.
