Which Long lens (400-500mm)?

Ok, in my previous thread I was looking for a fast telephoto lens which has now been bought at a bargain price:thumbs:

Now I'm loking for a loong lens.

Realistic, I can't afford a single focus lens.

Sigma appear to have a selection (50-500, 150-500 & 170!-500, 200-500,120-400,200-500 & 300-800).

Nikon have a few (80-400, 200-400).

Not sure what the others have to offer yet.

As per my previous question, which is the best lens for the cash?
 
The Sigma 150-500 OS or its little brother, the 120-400 OS are both excellent lenses. I use my 150-500 and my 5D3 for nearly all my aviation shots and occasionally I borrow the wifes 120-400 with my back up 7D. I bought both of them from Panamoz before their price hike but One Stop Digital still have them at a reasonable price, definitely within your budget anyway. There's a lot of shots on my Flickr account taken with the 150-500 if you want to have a look, most of them are SOOC and without any PP.
 
The 170-500 doesn't get as good reviews as the 150-500, but I have to have admit I've never used the 170-500.

A common theme with sigma's is they can have questions asked over their quality control (numerous arguements all over the web on that one!), but if you take your time, test a couple and choose a good one, then you'll have a very good lens.

I did have a go with a 120-400 a while back and didn't rate it - no doubt someone here will have a differing opinion though!

If you can afford it and want new then go to a shop where you can test individual lenses and get the best 150-500 they have. Check out camerapricebuster.co.uk for prices and stockists

I had the Sigma 170-500mm lens and to be honest I wasn't over impressed with it so I sold it.

I just bought a sigma 400f5.6 off of here for £160 ok if only works at 5.6 but it seems like a well built sharp piece of kit!! Just need a sunny day to try out properly!!

I forgot to say I'm using a D5100 so small sensor.
I have 2Sigmas now, 10-20f4 &70-200 f2.8OS. The both appear good lenses although the 10-20 struggles in poor light.
I could always use a TC but ina previous post I was convinced that this wouldn't give as good results.

Tamron AF 200-500mm ?
 
so it looks like it has to be sigma?
Nikon a little short and more money for a poorer lens?

You should be aware that tamron have a rather rare 200-400mm f5.6 which seems to get not bad reviews!

It can't be picked up for something like £200...

If I were in your situation I'd be looking for a used combination of a 2x teleconverter and a sigma 70-200mm OS or a 150-500mm / 50-500mm OS (tested in my hands).
 
Definately another vote for the sigma... capture great detail at a pretty good price tag!

I got one for my Nikon off ebay for £65 :thumbs:
 
Bargain.
I missed a Sigma x2 TC which could have worked well on the 70-200. It sold for £65.
I have just bought a Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens for £15 :)
You have to love poor listings on ebay
