Which long lens?

Ok so I've had my camera about a month now (400d) but already I am needing a longer lens for what I want to shoot. I want to do equine photography mainly.

I know I would like a nifty fifty for portraits/closer up subjects but I'm finding longer lenses a mine field!

I'm thinking my budget won't allow for anything amazing and have been looking at 70-300mm tamrons etc. And have seen the 55-250 canon iS on eBay for £140 ish.

I notice these are f4-5.5 types, does this mean they will be slower/darker/not as clear?? Sorry for the rookie questions but I'm finding books a bit hard going!

I really want something long enough to fill the frame if the subject is quite far away.

If your budget is sub £200 go for the 55-250 and if you're quick you can get this one for £120:

If you can stretch to £400 then a second hand 70-200/4 would be a good buy.

mmm I would try to save for the 70-200L, even if its just the standard f4 version, if you want to catch the geegees in action 1600 max iso and 3 fps would benefit from some L glass I think ?!.
