Yes
I am sure you have had this before, but i am going to buy one of these used and not sure which way to jump.
this will be my first attempt at macro work and it will be just for personal use, critters, flowers that type of thing plus some portraits.

I've used both extensively. In short, all macro lenses are very nice - you really have to decide working distance and also what kind of 'macro' shots you will be taking.

I dabbled with macro, I preferred the Tamron as it also takes a lovely portrait shot. Another option for consideration would be a Tokina 100mm macro lens.

I bought a Sigma 105 off here a couple of months ago - just to play with. And I have to say its a splendid little lens! This is taken with it sitting on a couple extn tubes.

I have the Sigma macro and am very impressed with its macro abilities. For image quality I don't think you can get anything that will be significantly better in the price range. The only slight shortcomings I think are with the push/pull style AF/MF switching which feels a little cumbersome and the AF is a bit slow and seems to hunt quite a lot (even with the limiter on unless in good lighting). I therefore prefer my 50mm prime for portrait and feel its the better focal length anyway.

I've played with both and only ended up with the Tamron rather than the Sigma because thet's what turned up locally (LCE, Exeter) in the second hand section first.

I used to have the Sigma 105mm, but I sold it and got the Sigma 70mm as I used it for portraits and I found the 105mm was just a bit too long on a cropped sensor.

They were recently reviewed along with offerings from canon and nikon, can't remember off the top of my head which magazine and the Tamron came out on top for performance and price. On the basis of this I have ordered on hope to pick it up next week. If I can find the review I will post it.

How have you found the 70mm? I had heard good things about this but i bought the 105 and it's been great. Pin sharp.

I have the Tamron 90mm and bought it for potraits and macro. n short, I love it!

Its sharp, crisp and wonderful for portraits, I'm not sure I would want muc longer for for portraits on my crop sensor.

I'd certainly recommend the Taomron 90mm

Alas six months ago I had exactly the same dilema I had my d700 and wanted the best macro I could get, all reviews lead to the tamron 90mm being legendary and the sigma coming a very close second to the nikon 105mm....
after reading a million and one reviews and each having pros and cons someone lent me the nikon 105 afd... I took it out for its first trial... my girlfriend had the sigma 180mm... I came back with this shot:

once id shot this I knew I had to have this lens, sure another lens might be a little sharper if you really want to zoom in to 400% an analyse pixels but i was blown away with the clarity and colour rendition, I got mine from e bay paid £260 quid for it and its mint, try grays of westminster and london camera exchange too for second hand ones... I know iv complicated this a little by adding a third thing to the mix but ultimately i dont think anyone makes a poor macro at these focal lengths 90-105 which ever you get i dont think youl ever think i wish id got the other one... I got the nikon caus i loved its results and they were good enough for me plus it kept all my gear nikon!

The 105mm is a fantastic lens and the reviews say that the 70mm is better and can't be faulted. I can't really notice a difference between them in optical quality, but I prefer the shorter focal length and physical size of the lens. I would recommend it to anybody, as you say pin sharp even wide open.
