Which Mag?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to which magazine out there is best for learning. All the mags in my local newsagent involve loads of "how to" photoshop tutorials and little advice on technique and basic camera skills, thus why a lot of my images involve a degree of PP. My wife subscribed me to Amateur Photographer which is good but are there any other mags out there I can learn from?

Thanks,
Iain

To be honest I find it best to look what each mag has to offer at that month. I usually go to WHsmith have a look at the mags and decide from there.

I cant remember which mag (possibly practical photography) but they have yearly feature where they teach you the basics...

It is held over 5 issues and you take photos each month corresponding to the topic and you get certificate at the end...

This month seems to be exposure and it looked quite in depth, about 18% grey etc...

Somebody might confirm which one, but can confirm when i get home...

I know it means money up front but for the cost of 3 or 4 magazines you could buy a good photography text book and have all the info without the adds and sponsored reviews.

I try different magazines from time to time, usually as a result of seeing something I am interested in on the cover, but I am usually dissapointed :(

A Quick trip to Smiths, flick through, realise I wouldn't read much in many of them, and then buy one that takes my fancy, which is normally Practical Photography or Amateur Photographer

Thanks guys, I suppose I'll be ok with Amateur Photographer and the Internet at the moment but will invest in a good book next time I'm in the city. Any suggestions?

Iain

Use the Internet for tutorials (loads of retouch tuts on YouTube for example), use the money saved on sources of inspiration.

I'd just put a fiver in a pot each month and read tutorials on the internet, it makes sense. Sure it's great just to pick something up to read while out in the sun but you're better off just googling the tutorial for what you need like music photography, portrait photography tips etc.

Also nowadays the magazines are paid to advertise cameras so there's lots of "you need this equipment" and they'll list a bunch of lenses, bodies and accessories that you will need when really you can get away with a point & shoot in some situations.

DSLR User magazine has had a recent change of editor and a change of direction.

The publishing group have launched a new magazine - Advanced Photographer I think it is which has allowed DSLR User to become directed more toward the less experienced reader.

Might be what you're looking for:thumbs:
