Which new monitor from my shortlist?

Yes
I already have a 2 monitor setup (1x Hannspree 19" & 1x Dell 2208 WFP) but looking to upgrade the Hannspree as I don't think it calibrates all that well.

Have had a look at a number of options, but wanting to get some opinions from peeps here.

My budget is £150-£200 and it'll be either another 22" or 24" monitor and act as the main monitor for PP'ing using LR3 and PS CS5

The 2 I've shortlisted are:

- Dell 2209WA (IPS) - refurbed from ebay - approx £160
- iiyama ProLite E2472HD (TN) - new for approx £190

Now, I'm not too au fait with the differences between IPS and TN panels, other than IPS are apparently Pro grade panels - is IPS that much better?

I've got a gregtag macbeth eye one Display 2 monitor calibrator so whichever one I get will be properly calibrated once set up.

So which do you suggest or is there another one I should have on my shortlist?

thanks as always

I got myself one of the Dell refurbs and absolutely love it.
I'm not particularly familiar with the technical differences between IPS and TN, except that IPS is certainly the way to go.

Can you notice a difference between your new IPS monitor and your old monitor? If so, how big a difference is it? (what was your old monitor too)

Absolutely!
Having said that, my old monitor was OLD and certainly nothing special.
So, not sure if the differences that I noticed are of much value, but here goes:
- widescreen & bigger
- colours are much better
- viewing angles much better

Buy a Dell refurb and you wont be able to tell the difference between that and a brand new monitor.
If I had enough desk space I would almost certainly get a 2nd one and run in a 2 monitor configuration.

I have an older Dell IPS and I would not change it for anything but a new bigger IPS.

I think HP may have something very similar, and don't be put off by slightly less wide aspect ratio (they are actually larger overall).

TN is really a poor choice if good colour reproduction is important at all.

I got my 2209 back at xmas, and love it. I got a new from here. For some reason the silver surround was 20 quid cheaper then the black one, so went with silver which is actually more grey! Depends if you want to save the 30/40 quid and get a refurb over the new one!

EDIT - Now seems to be only 10quid cheaper.

IMHO, the silver bevel does not look as nice as black.
Also, the refurb can be had for £159 inclusive of VAT and next day delivery.
The PC Buy It price excludes VAT, so assuming that you go for the black bevel, thats another £35 on top of the price.

Just digging this thread up again, I assume for £150ish this is about as good as Monitors get?

Dell 2209WA refurb.

I have a Dell M1330 XPS laptop but feel I need a better screen for image processing.

How do you calibrate it and how often..............? Does it need calibrating?

have bitten the bullet and bought the Dell 2209WA from nrg_it on eBay today - will get it hooked up, calibrated as soon as it arrives and compare it to existing Dell 2208 (not IPS) monitor I've got as they'll be sitting side by side

thanks for the inputs peeps

I calibrate my 2209WA every 2 weeks or before a long print run. Printer is calibrated as well.

monitor arrived today (free next day delivery from nrg_it - can't be bettered!!) - all hooked up and calibrated - can honestly say it looks as if it were brand new! initial impressions are very positive in terms of contrast, colours etc. will see how I get along with it, but think we're gonna get on just fine

a quick update nearly a month on

at first I couldn't see much difference between the 2 calibrated monitors, but the new one (2209WA) has really come into its own! much better colour definition, better contrast - just better overall! I used to think my other Dell monitor (2208 WFP) was head and shoulders over the Hanspree - but the new 2209WA is light years ahead - really is a super monitor.

thanks for the help in deciding
