Which nikon 60mm macro?

I've only used the older AF-D one. Found that to be pretty good. AF was slow but that didn't bother me in the slightest as I would typically use manual focus anyway for macro stuff. I believe the optics are meant to be similar so the only reason I can see to go for the AF-S version is if you intend to use it as a portrait lens or similar where AF speed will be of more concern.
 
Is it going to be for macro or for short telephoto portraiture? For macro, there are definite alternatives to consider. If you plan on staying DX then the newer Nikkor 85mm f/3.5 micro is hard to beat for the money. All the good stuff - modern design, AF-S, lens coatings, VR and so on - but half the price of the newer 105 VR, which is technologically similar. Being a proper Nikkor, no compatibility problems down the line with your cameras, and quicker focusing than the Tamron with its slower focus motor. Plus, it's really light meaning you can usefully handhold without having to continually counter the weight of the front elements. No one could ever suggest the 105VR is a light lens!

It's probably Nikon's most underrated lens, but one which will gain a cult following over the next few years.

The AF-S has internal focusing so the outer element doesn't extend out.

Mine is probably my sharpest lens and I use it for head shots too. :)
 
Have you tried a 60mm Macro?

If not I suggest you do, IMVHO there aint a lot of working space, end of lens to subject....can you live with that
 
You will find that quite a few websites reckon the Sigma 70mm macro the sharpest lens they've tested; worth checking out.
