A little history first first post.

Been a Pro photographer for 21 years,(PR,commercial, weddings, portraits) always used Nikon as digital cameras/lenses.

I have owned or stil own:

D1,d1x,d2x,d200. all lenses F2.8 Non DX about 100k shutters per year.

Doing a wedding today, and the D2x gave up the ghost, nearly 500k shutters now the prob i dont have the money at the moment to replace with D3x

Never really took much notice of other Nikon cameras. What do you guys recommend? Been reading through a few things, D700 and D3 keeps coming up.

Really not sure.

Thanks

D3 money not a prob. just dont want to waste money these days. Was thinking another D2x London camera exchange about £899, but didnt want to spend if technology is old theses days.

Another D2x would be the obvious option so it's no change whatsoever, but there are obviously more advanced models around these days with better high ISO performance, better AF etc. Thing is, Nikon have ditched the DX sensor in a gripped pro body, which irks me, because a new version of the D2x would have been a nice alternative to the D3 if you you were that way inclined in needing DX crop factor.

Anyway, I digress.... D300s is a decent buy if it's crop factor you want to retain, although i think there's a big lean towards what the D700 offers these days in terms of FF performance for a lot less than D3 series RRP. D3 series are obviously boss

I got a used D2x from aperture.co.uk for £740 a few months back but have seen them for sub-£700 at used dealers.

.... if the D2x technology wasn't too old for you today, why would it be too old for you tomorrow? Plus you know that camera inside out. Has anyone ever complained about your old technology or image quality?

I run a D1,D2Hs,D1X and I don't class these as technology old, May be I am;)
BTW a D2X at £899 is about the right price.:)

Just dont want to invest money in old technolgy and D2x would have to be second hand, as a pro-camera prob like mine. hammered!!

have budget about £2100 all my lenses are full frame. (old Style with aperture ring)

Dose the D700 have Video? (really dont need that)

LOL, The D1x is still my favorite camera. love it. just about to sell my old one as was quoted £700 to fix it by fixation.

The D3 has to be worth looking at. I shifted from Canon for them and they're within your budget, just. High ISO performance is significantly better than the 2's.

Plus, you get the option of ful frame, 1.5X crop and 5:4 in one body. FAir enough it drops the pixel count but we've got too many anyway ;)

thanks everyone. Only thing putting me off the D700 is no vertical grip, unless you want to put the add on. which makes it near D3 prices

If the D700 grip is an issue, Nikon have just finished a promotion where there's a free grip with every D700. Even if you don't plan on buying new, this is a good time to hunt the classifieds for unwanted grips at great prices.

Anyway, I'm not in any position to comment on your best camera - you click a month that which I do a year - but it's a win/win situation for you, it seems. A 'cheap' D2x puts the trusty technology you know right back in your hands, and a D3 or D700 gives you that tech and more. You can't make a bad decision here!

yer i did see that. but promotion finished end of july.. . maybe good idea to look at ebay. but also dose that mean Nikon are going to launch new camera?

I shoot PR and press - the D3 changed things forever - the one to go for.

Welcome to TP. It's a shame you didn't get a D700 last month as there was a free grip offer. The Link Delight (Meike) grip at about £65 is great value and looks and feels just like the Nikon model but is made of ABS rather than the same alloy as the camera.

The D700 is a corker of a camera but if you love the D1x (I love the D1x too!) and you got 500K from the D2x then really I think I would find a D3.

Seriously a D3 is more your bag than anything else. The D3 will just go in your camera bag instead of the D2x and no problem!! There are things you will gain though, ultra high ISO in comparison to the D2x. You can actually use 2000-3200 ISO REALLY!! I think the D2x was limiting at about 800? That is a BIG difference.

for press work I've used up to 12,800 on the D3 - just amazing - looks fine in newsprint to - but regularly shoot up to 6400 - loads of examples - as I said - it changes everything - even using flash - your flash will recycle hours before the guy using a D2x because you can confidently shoot at 2000 iso and beyond.

clifton cameras have new D3's with 2yr warranty for £2569 for the extra £700 or so difference, (£500 if you buy the D700 grip) i'd go for that, the D700 shutter is rated at 150,000, the D3 is 300,000 + the AF is better

I do a lot of low light no flash in churches. ( concerts mainly for private schools)

I'd say go with the D3, as others have said the ISO performance is better than that of the D2x
