Which Nikon fit UWA for landscapes ?

Hi folks. I have a D300 and up 'till now I've had a Sigma 10-20, Tamron 17-50 2.8 and a Sigma 70-200 2.8. This week I've bought a Sigma 24-70 2.8, which makes the 17-50 a bit redundant, and I'm thinking of selling this and my 10-20 and going for a Nikon ultra wide. My first thought is to look at the 12-24 F4 lens as this has a fast aperture and doesn't give me any overlap of focal lengths in my camera bag. How does this lens compare with the 10-24 in terms of IQ ? The lens would be used for landscapes, so the larger aperture of the 12-24 would be a bit irrelevant I think, but if it's a better lens.....I could stretch to about £600 s/h, is there a better lens at this price that would be worth considering ? I don't expect I'd find a 12-24 2.8 at my budget but if I could stretch myself would this lens be better for landscape work ?

Thanks

tokina 11-16 2.8 is widely regarded as being one of the best ultrawides for crop sensors.

Tokina 11-16 is my recommendation too. I've had the Nikon 12-24 and the Tokina is just as good image quality wise but not so good handling flare..

Not sure I'm with you there strax - you're recommending the Tokina over the Nikon because it's not as good ? *scratches head *

The image quality of the tokina is as good as if not better than the nikon.

The flare issue is only when looking directly towards the sun, where the Tokina isn't as good at handling it.

See here...

Thanks for the explanation. Just had a read of Ken's review, and although he is a bit "Marmite" as a reviewer the Tokina does look pretty special.

Some of his opinions are a bit OTT but his lens comparisons are usually pretty good.

What about the Tokina 12-24 pro II f4 - I prefered that over the sigma 10-20 when I had both lenses....

If you can afford the Nikon, it's a great lens but when you compare it to the Tokina, there's so little in it that the saving is too good to overlook. Only reason I bought the Nikon was because I bought used for £450.

Tokky 11-16mm is a very useful tool thanks to the faster aperture and also has good optics.
