An SB-600 is a good starter point, I had one for ages and used it quite sucesfully to photograph 2 weddings. I traded up to the SB-800 when I started doing strobist work (using flash heads instead of 'proper' studio lights), mainly for the extra power.

My advise would be to go straight for an SB-800 if you can afford it. You're already considering it now so if you're anything like me if you get a 600 you'll always be wanting an 800 and it's only a matter of time before you trade up.

I personally wouldn't bother with an SB-900 at your level as the extra size will be an issue and cause you to leave at home on those occasions when you need it.

Other than that, get some kit (doesn't matter which one), and start using it!

been offered an sb600 for £125 should i buy and use for now and buy a sb800/900 later and keep the sb 600 as a backup, if a buy i cant afford a sb800 for a while.

As the owner of an SB600 and an SB800, I love both of them and, for what you intend to use it, the SB600 is more than sufficient.

£125 is a bargain price if in good condition!

i normally say that like when people on here got d3s for £1100,
but a guy on another forum asked me if i wanted it or a quick sale started at £140 because i said i wanted an sb-800 he came down to £120
