Which Nikon lens?

I thought I wanted/needed a Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 but now 2 others have entered into the equation. :arghh:

The Nikkor 24-85mm f2.8-f4 and the Nikkor 16-85mm f3.5-f5.6.

Now I realise that these 2 are nowhere near the 24-70mm quality but they are a hell of a lot lighter.

I currently have a Nikon D90 (which I have no plans to upgrade any time soon) Nikkor 35-70mm f2.8 which I would be selling as I would have no need for it plus a Sigma 150-500, a Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Nikkor 35mm and 50mm primes so any suggestions about what to get/keep would be appreciated!

I found 24mm to be way too "long" on DX.

Had the 16-85mm for most part of a year, but still needed wider. Very good lens though!

- and I see, MPB has a handful of them...

As I'm always in manual mode, I found constant aperture a must... so ended up with Nikkors 12-24mm f/4 and 24-120mm f/4. Great(est) combo... but totally ruined now, I've gone FX

So my vote goes for the 16-85mm!
Sold mine to a friend for his D5100, and it's all he ever use.
 
Have you not considered the 17-55mm f2.8? I really love mine on the D7000 and would really miss it if I went FX. I'd always assumed I'd replace it with the 24-70mm when I can afford FX buts few threads on here in the last week have not been complimentary about it.
Depends if 55mm is long enough for you I guess. I also have the 70-200mm for longer stuff.
 
If you're using the Dx body then the 16-85 hands down, you've got 2 fast primes if you need something faster. I've got the 24-70 and its a big old beast to lug around without good reason!
 
16-85 is great on DX, roughly equivalent range to 24-120 that I use on FX a lot but a lot smaller and lighter. The 24-70 would be much bigger and heavier, more restricted range and you may find it unbalanced on a D90 (I found it unbalanced on anything other than a D3).
 
IF 24mm is wide enough for you on Dx, John has already mentioned the 24-120 range. The current fixed f/4 version is significantly better than the old variable aperture one but on Dx it's not very wide. Since you're also considering the 16-85, maybe the 18-70 would do for you? Punches well above its price.
 
How about an 18-70, a much underated lens if that is the range you are looking at, they sell quite cheaply 2nd hand.
Heather I don't think I'm that far from you so if you wanted to try one and the 12-24, another of my favourites give me a shout.

Just a foot note...

The 16-85 is classes above the 18-70. Had the 18-70 before the 16-85, and it *is* a nice little lens, but build, distortion and IQ is clearly better on 16-85.

And the 2mm wider is really a lot wider too! :wave:
 
Another vote for the 16-18, I use one on my D90 and it's beautifully balanced, and although I am upgrading to a D7100 as soon as finances permit, hopefully it will sit on that one just as well too. The quality of the lens is superb.

:oops: :$ forgot to say I have an 18-70mm but not overly impressed with IQ!

I am definately veering towards the 16-85mm and Park Cameras are open until 7.30pm.....:D

Must do a bit more research first though!

.....and found another lens that I had forgotton about to sell! :banghead: Nikkor 55-300mm.

...and I forgot about my Sigma 10-20mm too! :facepalm:

Sorry, haven't tried that one. Was in my stack as well, but got rejected due to reviews... "average zoom"

And as learned from the 18-70, I needed wider. Couldn't really find anything better...

Until I had to, of course. But what an unpleasant price tag...

I'm sure, that whatever you choose, it will be good. There aren't really any bad Nikkors out there... sort of... so it's down to wanted specs.

Perhaps make a scan of all your shots to see, what focal lengths you're at?

You are welcome to try my 35-70mm but you are a long way away! :)

16-85 is the one that makes most sense for crop sensor, unless of course you plan a future FF upgrade and then you might want to add the Nikon 24-120 F4 to your list too, not quite the same quality of the 24-70F2.8 but very good

Thanks Simon, but as I am very happy with my D90s I have no plans to go FF. :)
