Hi All,

I mentioned this briefly on another thread but I thought I'd ask for advice here from a wider audience.

I've been looking for a full frame camera and came across a deal at the local AD whereby you get 50% off any lens when purchased with a full frame Nikon. I've already been looking at the D750 for a couple of weeks now and this deal is just too good to turn down. The only thing is I'm undecided on what lens to go for :eek:

I'm completely torn between the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 ii. It's unlikely I'll get this sort of discount again so I'm tempted to go for the 70-200 (given that I already have 14-56..on a crop.. covered by the XT1).

What would you do?
 
Depend what you shoot Adam - both are of Nikon best
the 70 200 is big and long - and a little heavy
the 24 70 is big and heavy

once you get f2.8 in there the Nikons become heavy but are extremely well built

IMHO you need a grip, (3rd party is OK), to balance both

you may as well get the lens anyway as you could always sell it at a profit …… but I suppose being in UAE money is not a problem!!!!!

get the new 800mm f5.6 Nikon!!!

You're absolutely right Bill.

For lens recommendations I'm always the first to ask that questions, but I'm struggling to answer it because the honest answer is "not sure yet".

I'm shooting a lot on my Fuji to build up a portfolio, but there isn't a specific area of photography I want to specialise in (yet). I'm perfectly happy with the XT1 as it stands, but I'd prefer to use it as back up and have a workhorse I can run into the ground. I have the money set aside, so it's a case of what might represent best bang for my buck.

To be honest, with the Fuji already covering the midrange I think I'm leaning towards the 70-200 2.8 vii.

Anyone have one and care to share their thoughts?

Sounds a good idea, bigger camera for a bigger lens, you're covered with very good glass at 85mm and under already.

I have only got the older 70 20mm VR first version - it is a good lens - I use it quite a bit but I shoot birds and Dragonflies and it is not good for either - I prefer 300mm and longer

at the other end I like the 105mm f2.8VR micro for general use and the the 50 f1.8

but a lot swear by the 24 70mm so I do not think that you could go wrong with that lens ……. isn't it supposed to be one of the sharpest around with a great IQ
 
Get the 70-200 using the deal. It'll have the higher re-sale value if down the line you decide not to hold on to.

Thanks Shaheed, I've just found out the discount is up to a maximum of £900. So whilst it covers the 70-200, it won't cover the 400 2.8. Nice idea though!
 
Where is this offer available. Mentioned it to a friend and she's very keen to get the d750!

The only negative thing that I have heard is that the VRll 70 200 is more like a 70 160mm ……… versus the VRl is 70 200mm

not sure why?
 
Focus 'breathing' when focusing at it's minimum distance I think.

I had one for a while, just never made use of it. I sold it on for what I paid for it, as I bought it from Holland and saved almost €600 towards the price for it over here.

I hate the term focus breathing, because it's more a focal shift - but it is there, it's been proven, at minimum focus distance it'll give more like 165-170mm. I've seen portrait photographers moan about it. Still a stellar lens, and does still give 200mm when shooting into the distance.
 
I would go down the 70-200 f/2.8 route using that deal. Maximum discount! Personally, I rarely use my tele at full stretch and MFD so any FL shift wouldn't matter to me.

Gary, dibs on the 750 when you fancy a change!!! ;)
