Is it worth getting a 40D over a 50D or not? Reason i ask is that i have been offered a 40D for £300 with 6 months warranty, under 2k shots or a 50D for £460 6 months, not sure on actuations. Both from the same camera shop.

Which one!!? Ta

The 40d is priced normally, nothing too special about the price. I'm not sure about the price of 50d bodies so couldn't say about that.

Edit I misread your post, if its under 2k actuations then its a good deal with 6 months warranty.
 
Guy in shop said 40D is in mint condition. He couldnt do an eosinfo check but got info off of card? Is that fine?

Really need to decide as shop said i have limited time to decide as they are holding both today for me.
 
Just because the number on the images says 2k doesn't mean the cameras only taken 2k images that can just be reset in the menus by anyones. The Eos software tool thing looks at what's recorded in the firmware the user doesnt have access to that that and it can't be reset other than by a service engineer.

I guessed that. Not sure if i should go for the 40D being the 'older' camera

There's nothing wrong with a 40D. Still a perfectly acceptable camera. If someone couldn't get decent shots from one, buying a 50D wouldn't fix that.

Just would i be better off spending the extra £120 on a 50D?
 
If it helps your decision, my opinion is that you will get better results on the 40D with mediocre lenses, but better results on the 50D with good quality glass.

It has a nicer screen for sure and micro adjust. There's a few other differences as well- more pixels etc. There always seems to be debate over whether the 50D is noisier and is actually a better camera. I don't shoot Canon enough to be able to comment so hard to say whether you would be better buying one or the other- you could argue both ways successfully.
If you have any doubt I'd go 50D- then you aren't always going to be thinking 'I should have got the newer camera'.

Only thing I would query is the 3month warranty- I would have expected the same 6 months if that is their standard and wonder why they are only prepared to give 3?
 
Got to decide by end of day they said as they cant keep them for days and days! lol
 
Just rang them and they said 6 months on the 50D too. It does have some slight marks on the rear LCD apparently though. Thing is, i have a spare, genuine LCD cover for a 50D in the house somewhere!!!

Got to try and work out if the extra expense for the 50D is worth it or not?

Depends on what lenses you can afford to go with it. If you have good glass then go with the 50D; if you will have to cut corners on the glass to afford the £120 extra, then go with the 40D.
 
Only got a 50mm 1.8 at the mo. Probably be getting a 55-250 but no 'L' glass.

In my opinion, with those lenses you will get as good results on the 40D as you would on the 50D. Unless there are any other features you need save your money.
 
You know what its like, you have one model of camera, car, whatever and always wonder if you should have the next model up or not!

I was wondering if the 40D would be outclassed by the 50D because of the higher MP etc etc.

I am tempted by the 40D because of the price mainly. My other option was to look for a 500D but that wouldn't be as good as the 2 above? Plus it would cost around £330 for body only!

Get the 50D, it's newer, better LCD, micro adjust and more MP which will help if you're doing hard cropping.

The price difference isn't enough to buy L glass but you might in the future.

The extra expense you should get back when reselling later down the line.

I had this same debate but it was either the 40D or 50D when you could buy both brand new.

I read all about the so called problems with ISO noise etc and went for the 50
And never looked back, it's a cracking body. If you're inclined there is also
Modified firmware that unlocks video capability although it's not something that interests me.

I've been shooting mine regularly at ISO 1600 and am impressed.
 
And of course the build quality in the XX range is better than the XXX range...

Both the 40 and 50 are great bodies - but as the previous poster stated, the 50d does have some significant improvements. I've owned both, and much prefer the 50d...

Like I mentioned in my thread - doesn't matter which you choose, it's the photographer that produces the images, and the camera is the tool that supports that production. Even a £50 compact can produce great images with the right photographer :) I'm sure you'll be happy whichever one you pick. It'll take some time to get used to the camera's capabilities.

Saying that both the 40 and 50d warrant consideration over anything in the xxx range...
 
intel, what did you decide to go for? could you let me know the shop? I might actually go for whichever one you didn't....

As for the reasons stated above get the 50d. the price is good too normaly around £450-480

The microfocus adj and screen are worth the price diffrance.

you know cameras are not described by just a mere MP number... in that case crappy compacts would be all we need. 40D can easily print to A3. Been there and done that and it looks good on the wall even after some cropping.
As a beginner you are extremely unlikely to benefit from the extra 5MP - arguably noisier an so on. Both have some serious limitations, and you may soon start looking at 1Dx even if you can't fully benefit from owning one. I'd suggest spending the difference on a good lens or a flash or a few books.

As I said, you can argue for and against each one but neither is a bad decision. It's your money and you have enough advice- just flip a coin and buy one if it's that bad and take some photos:lol:
 
Just looked at Dpreviews and they rate the 40D very highly compared to the 50D
 
Bought the 50D for £460 today and it is absolutely mint! Box looks brand new too! 6 months warranty.

Thing is, my wife came home with a G3 for me today too!! Early birthday present!!

Now, having played with both for most of the day i really really do prefer the G3!!!! Yikes!!

Looks like i may be selling the 50D as i really cant keep both. I only have a pair of arms. lol

Do you think i would get close to what i payed for it? It has 18k actuations

Anyone else buy and then have something else pop up that they prefer?
 
I'm sure your original post said the 50d was £420? I remember as it was £10 less than you were offering me for mine? But see it's edited today? Was it a different camera or something? If the one you bought was £460 as you said in your last post? For such a haggler I'd have thought you'd have picked the £420 one? :) :)

I rung them and asked and they said only if there was a problem with it would the give a refund!! :bang: Cant blame them i suppose.

Have been looking at the G3 when the wife has been with me so she sneaked off and bought me one!! lol

I got it wrong as it was never £420 apparently. Guy said in the shop when i asked him the price that they would never have quoted me one for that price!! lol

I could have sworn they said that price though so i ammended the post when i got home with it.

Anyway, lesson learned, if you fancy something and you have a generous wife, make sure she tags along with you when you are hunting out gear!! I did get to a few shops that had the G3 and did play around with them quite a bit. In the end i thought a 50D would be better suited to my needs but when i had the 2 next to each other at home and was able to try them out the G3 just felt right for me! Now, where's my washing gloves and mop as the wife expects me to grovel for 6 months!! lol

So why change the first post from £420 to £440 if it was £460? I'm confused :bonk:

Why don't you give it a few days use of both to see which you prefer? Seems an incredible rush to sell it without knowing the other cameras limitations?

Yea, my bad i guess. Never been perfect at putting things right properly. I'll put it right now. :cuckoo: Changed it to 6 months too as i thought he said 3!!!

As for trying it out, i made up my mind after a few hours! The G3 just seems right for me! Perfect in every way. Def think i made the right choice to keep it and sell the 50D.
