Which one is the budget lens?

Which one of the following is the budget range and how do they stack up to against Nikon/ Nikkor?

Tamron, Sigma, Tokina

I'm looking to buy but have to go 2nd hand and I'm not sure which is considered the better make. They are all brands I've heard, but I want to know which is considered the better make.

Any comments are much appreciated.
 
It all depends on your budget, they all make excellent lenses as well as fairly rubbish ones (imho) as do Canon and Nikon. Which lenses are you looking at?
 
I think it will depend on the lens you are considering, I think you'll find that no one brand is better than the other, but a particular lens may be better or worse than its competitors.. e.g. the Sigma UWA might be better than the equivalent Tamron, but a Tamron telephoto might be better than the equivalent Sigma..
 
All three make good lenses - Sigma probably make the higher number of 'budget' optics but that's purely down to the number of lenses it has in its portfolio. Tamron and Tokina make way more models.....

Tokina was an off-shoot of nikon (apparently) in the 70s/80s when Nikon were more focussed on prime lenses and some of its engineers wanted to make zooms.

I have/have used all three and those lenses I added to my line-up were all very good.

What focal lengths are you interested in and what budget constraints do you have?

I have the kit lens which is an AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED; and I picked up a second hand Sigma 70-300 1:4-5.6 D DL a couple of weeks back.
So now I'm looking for 35mm prime (50mm after crop factor).

It will have to be used and if £50 is enough, that would be great!
But with so many on eBay, I don't know what to look for.

So, as it sounds like I have to worry about the actual model rather than a make, does anyone have any suggestions considering my budget.

Also, a close focal range would be nice.
 
What 35mm primes are you finding on eBay at that price? It's a shame you can't afford to buy Nikkor's 35mm prime, it's super cheap (£160ish?) and an incredible lens from what I hear.
 
I'd hold off and wait for a Nikkor 35mm f1.8 to come up used. Only slight problem is that they don't seem to come up used very often on here because they're so nice :lol:

The ebay one Alan has pointed out smells fishy... "gets stiff when zooming, might need greasing"? It's a prime, it can't zoom. And if it's stiff when focussing, which is the only thing I can think of, how much strain is that going to put on focus motor/screw?

I've got my eye on a few 50mm, not quite whay I want, but the price may be too irrasistable - we'll see in a few days!

I bought my 50mm D used for £60, seems to be about the ballpark unless you're buying on ebay. Nice lens, but experience has shown that (for me) the 35mm focal length is more usable, 50mm just feels a bit too long on DX.
