Which One Of These Red Snapper Tripods?

Good evening!

I tried to take my Tripod to London last week, but Ryanair wouldn't let me take it on the flight (one item of luggage per person), even after I offered to strap it to my case... so in the bin it went.

Thankfully it wasn't too expensive (I actually think I got it from Tesco and was under £30.)

Anyway.... A tripod is always a useful thing to have, so I'm going to invest in new one. Red Snapper's seem to have good reviews on here so I think I'll go with them. They have these two, both for the same price:

Hi, I bought this one and the first 2 broke. They replace the second one with the next model up which has a better head on it.

I'd recommend you spend a bit more and get the one in the link above.

283 and 284 are 3 and 4 segment legs - that's basically the only real difference. I have the 284 as it collapses smaller than the 283 and so can be put inside hand luggage. I have taken mine on Ryanair a couple of times inside my carryon case.

Personally, I'd go for the 528 head or better still the RSH-12 combo here: http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RS-284___RSH-12_Ball_head.html

I know it is twice the price, but the ball head is sooo much more configurable than the 3-way (especially if you want to point the camera upwards at the sky ;))
 
I too have been thing of getting a redsnapper.

Silly question ball heads look nice and quick to use but can they do portrait as well as landscape? As I cannot see hinge on the top plate.

Two broke? The reason I thought about these tripods is because I thought they were known for being strong, reliable tripods! :thumbsdown:

They are getting more and more expensive now! I don't think I could justify spending £100 on a tripod, I would rather put the money towards some new glass to be honest. I don't find myself using a tripod very often either.

What are the main advantages of having a "ball head"?

Ease of pointing and some resistance to moving. The 3-way heads are a nightmare to position exactly as you want IME and if you want to take long exposures of the heavens the mechanics get in the way. The ball heads are much easier to just point where you want the camera to point

How sturdy is it out of interest? The more compact size appeals to me but not if it makes it less sturdy. I currently have a cheapo £30 tripod that was fine with a 400D but is less than solid under the weight of a 7D & 17-55 so main reason for upgrading would be something far more solid.
 
I don't have a 283 to compare it with but I have never worried about sturdiness..
