Yes
i have just started a new job, and pick up £280 a week
any recommendations on whats affordable and effective ?

depends on how much of that £280 you can spend !

might help if you post a few more details , post seems a bit vague

i can pretty much spend all of it.
and im torn between a nikon or a canon.
both are dammned good cameras, but like i said i need to know whats cheap,
but also wont lack in performance and quality.

Ooooh no another Nikon vs Canon :D

The 1st 2 replies were people with Nikon's listed, that should tell you something ;)

Oh right.. yea err, I don't know the canon scales, but the entry level Nikon is the D3000 which you can pick up for under £300 new with a lens, a D5000 is about £400 with 1 kit lens, D90 is £800 with 1 lens, D300 is around £1200 for body only, D3 is about £4500.

Pick a rough level - were you planning to only spent £280, or save some and spend more??

Plus depending what you're doing the 1 kit lens probably won't be enough, if you're doing birds you'll want at least 300mm zoom and you're looking at a couple hundred or so for a half decent one 2nd hand, something like the Nikon 200-400mm is £4600 approx new.

So basically, a full budget is needed, not how much you earn per weeks, how much you want to spend - and the sort of photography you're interested in. That 300mm lens is pointless if you're doing portraits or macro work!

no no no nooooo i dont wanna start a fight lol
i do prefer the nikon only because ive only ever used it, so it is biased xD
i am willing to try canon...but i need to know models and stuff
the nikon im used to is the D40

We need to write to Harry Hill and get him to organise a "FIGHT" :).

It all depends how new to photography you are, there is no point of spending £1000 on a camera if it is above and beyond your needs. As Gemma says its the lens that will give you more of a cash flow nightmare and will ultimately affect image quality the most. Go to a camera shop and ask to have a quick grop of a selection of entry to midrange cameras and see whats best for you. Make a list of the ones you like then go and do your research were more than happy to help on here...... as long as you buy a Canon. :)
