Which option for new body?

I am going to buy a new body to move up from my current 400D. There are two options for me one is much cheaper than the other.

1) - Buy a Brand new 40D + EF-S 17-85 lens kit. Keep the 40D and sell the 17-85 + my old 400D body for say about £400. Therefore the cost to me is around £110 in the end.

2) - Buy a 50D from Kerso for £650 and sell the 400D body for £200 ish. Cost in the end is about £450.

Which option should I go for? Is the 50D really worth the extra £350 or so over the 40D? Both would of course be brand new. I have about £650 so the 50D option would be pretty much maxing my budget, 40D would give me some spare cash for summer holidays.

arrrgh I am so confused as to what to do.

If money's tight, 40D is very similar to the 50D, except for 15mp and some other relatively minor enhancements.

If you don't need 15mp, which will only be noticeable in bigger enlargements or when cropping to gain reach (it's popular with birders for that reason) then I would say 40D if that is the price differential you could realise.

Go for the 40d, save some cash.
You wont be disappointed :)

I've got both bodies and to be honest there's not much in it, sure the 50D has more MP but the 40D still has plenty, the other improvements between them are minor. I'd go for the 40D and put the money saved towards a new lens or a flash... given your figures it seems you can get a new 40d with 17-85 for £510 which is a very good price.
