After taking my 40D and 24-70 with me to my Aikido beach practise on saturday and watching my wife lug it out of the car to take some photos of us practising, I've finally come to the conclusion we need a family camera to take out for those all important 'snaps'. My 40D is just too much sometimes.

So, small, pocketable, discreet and also cheap :D

Video mode might be nice
Optical Zoom
Nice screen
Some degree of control over the photos would be nice, but not essential tbh.

Cheap and small are the main concerns. Any thoughts?
 
How cheap and how small though :naughty:

You can't really go wrong with any of the wee Canon cameras, if you want to keep it in the family, so to speak...
 
Canon and Panasonic always come out top, although there are plenty others just as good. New Canon S90 looks v nice. Fuji F200 has trick sensor. Loads of choice, but this time last year I bought a Pano FX500 because it's good, small, big screen, wide lens, and manual controls.

The only thing I regret is that I paid thick end of £300 :eek: Now superceded by the almost identical FX550, it can be had for £170 from Amazon :thumbs: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0018DATJK/

I also like Pano FX37 - same camera but smaller, smaller screen and without the manual controls (that I never use :lol: ).
 
another vote for the fx37, cracking wide angle P&P
lumix lx3, canon g9 g10
down the scale the 100IS or something from canon is supposed to be great
 
I've been toying with the idea of a rugged, waterproof point and shoot for things like beaches...
 
Panasonic LX3 for me.

The 365 shots from the last few weeks have all been with it - i just can't seem to put it down.

Even does HDR ;)

Cost's a little mroe than 'cheap' but its worth it for the fabulous 24mm F2 lens :D

I've recommended the Panasonic TZ series a few times. http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=1839417#post1839417

Any of the three would fill your requirement well (I have the TZ3 as a P&S).
Leica x10 optical with 28mm WA, large screen, v-good video repro (displays well on a 42'' LCD telly), and quite a few bells & whistles for a degree of control if you don't want to use the pre-prog stuff on the dial.

I noticed a waterproof Canon one in the Calumet catalogue and at first glance it seemed to be under £40, which sounded just the ticket -then I realised that that was just the price of the extended warranty and it was actually £360 :bang: :lol:

I just bought a Panasonic FX500 for £145 from Camerabox. Pleased with it so far, the manual control and the 24mm wideangle end of the zoom range were the deciding factors.

Not having an optical viewfinder takes a bit of getting used to though!

If there are three figures......it's probably too expensive.
I really only want something for family snapshots. I was even looking at a Samsung in Asda for about £70...until I found it on play for £55 :p
It's literally going to be used for point and shoot stuff. I'd like to be able to use it 'photographically', but if I'm honest I probably never would anyway.
It's really for times when my 40D is just too much to take out on a day trip, or to a party or some such.
 
Thanks Slapo. This is going to sound really fussy, but Im not keen on HP stuff tbh. Nephew had that model I think and I didnt like it at all.

and
Samsung ES15

I'd have to recommend Panasonic too. We've a Lumix TZ3 and has exposure compensation and an Inteligent Mode we're happy with the quality and the movies are good too

The LX3 is an extremely good shout the only downfall is there's no optical viewfinder but the in camera processing and lens quality makes up for it.
 
I lokoed at the Ixus100 (more than id planned on this costing) but i was sold on it.
Then I fell in love with the Panasonic TZ5 to find it's been discontinued and replaced by a pricier model :(

Can't find anywhere with TZ5 ins now.

Edit : Sod it. The Ixus 100 is looking like the final choice tbh. The only niggle I think I might have is not being able to zoom in while filming..(Well, not optically anyway), apart from that it looks ideal.
 
Marcel. If you do buy the IXUS, can you let us know how you find it?
I've been considering buying one myself.
 
You won't regret the Ixus. I got into photography with an 4MP Ixus 40. I still use it now alot. Great, sharp, colourful shots as long as the light is OK. Just not much manual control.
 
Panasonic TZ6. It's the same as the TZ7 but does not have HD video and face recognition. Same awesome lecia lens!!!

The HD video was the pull for the Tz5 for me tbh.

However, in the end I plumped for the Ixus 100 which has just arrived....Battery is on charge and Im just waiting for the courier with the memory card now....
 
I've just picked up a Panny Lumix TZ7, mainly to make a few small videos for my website and to do little bits of filming when I'm on holiday. Image quality seems quite good and the 25mm - 300mm zoom is pretty impressive!
 
I would have loved the TZ7 tbh, but it was too far out of my price bracket to justify what is essentially a P&S tbh.

It was only because the ixus has HD video recording that I could justify the cost of it. Not sure if I need to replace my DVcam now if the ixus is good enough with it.
