which prime for son number 1

son number 1 has the 5D he wants a prime.

cash wise he can go to a 50mm 1.4 canon or sigma ex dg or a nifty fifty and spend the rest on a other lens


what would you go for.

sigmas EX is fill frame

canon 1.4 ??

1.8 ??

also what about the sigma 30mm what is the point of this lens.

The 30mm is to emulate 50mm on FF so no need for that on the 5D.

Personally I'd just go for one of the 1.4 50mm primes.:)
 
I have tried the Nikon 50mm and the Sigma 50mm and have ended up keeping the Sigma. Wide open it is superb and build quality is excellent.

It is a big lens but the very large glass greatly helps to cut down vignetting wide open

I think the Sigma 30mm is for cropped sensors only
 
Due to quality control issue that's common with sigma I'd get him to go with the canon 50mm f1.4 or alternatively get him to go for the f1.8 version just it case he can't cope with prime lenses and if he can then he could always sell it on and buy the f1.4 version.
