Which prime

Looking to sell my 24-70 and buy a prime, but dont know which? Any advice would be grateful, will be using on a 5d mk2 for portraiture ect? Any sample pics with primes would be fantastic.

i have three primes. All of them most excellent.

I sold my 24-70 for exactly the same reason.

Canon 35mm 1.4L
Sigma 85mm 1.4
Canon 135 f/2 L

it's hard to choose between these three but if I only could have one I'd probably go with the 85mm because i like to do head and shoulders portraits a lot.

The other two are even better lenses though, just not quite used as much
 
Joe do you regret selling your 24-70 or not? also how much are the sigma 85mm 1.4

For portrait on full frame I like the Canon 85mm f1.8, but haven't tried the sigma. As a walkabout lens I like a 50mm prime.
 
didnt think the 85mm 1.8 was a full frame lens?????????

It is! I find going to photozone.de and going to the full frame canon reviews section helpful to see what is available for FF - they haven't reviewed absolutely everything but its a good starting point.
 
here mate, have a trawl though the Prime Lens Portraits thread, might give you some ideas...

It's manual focus only, but don't discount the Samyang 85mm f1.4! Insanely sharp, even wide open and the bokeh is soooo smooth. I've had it for around a year and it's one lens i will NEVER get rid of

I don't regret it at all. It's a great lens but it's so big and heavy and because of that I always found myself wanting to use my primes, the only zoom I have is the 17-40 now.

The convenience of a zoom doesn't appeal to me anymore, I enjoy a prime much more.

The sigma 85 is around £700 if memory serves me right, check camerapricebuster to see. I have owned the canon 85mm 1.8 as well, and it's great but the sigma is better, so that's why I have it instead of the 1.8 now.
 
The Siggy 85mm is indeed a lovely lens, and some reviewers say it's better than the Canon f1.2.

I bought a 5D just to use this lens :D (and the 12-24mm also.) I would have considered the Canon f1.8 but the bokeh of the Sigma looks so much better IMVHO and I think that's a very important factor in a lens like this.
 
The 135mm f2L is another lovely lens. 5D2 + 135 + 35 is my ideal combo.

If your mind turns toward the 135, you are only round the corner from me and welcome to pop round and try it out.

I'm sure its a good lens but the price range is very similar to the Canon 85mm 1.8?

yeah the 135 is better than the 85 in almost every way.

it's just the focal length that makes it a bit more specialised i find. Not really an indoor lens for example, and for full length shots you have to be pretty far away.

it's a dream of a lens but I just find the 85mm I use more because of the focal length. But any opportunity I get to pull out my 135 instead and the sigma is in the bag!
 
Hi guys, just a quick question here if I may...

The Canon L series f2.8 100mm Macro IS appears to be exactly what I'm after. And at 719.99 a good price on an L lens.

I'm just wondering what differentiates between this particular lens, and other 100mm prime lenses that are not Macro.

I guess it's a trade-off between aperture and auto focus....
 
No need to trade off. Get the sigma and have both 1.4 and autofocus, just have to add a bit more coin.
