depends, if its wildlife and the animals are hostile and dont like other species its best for infrared so you could hide and they wouldnt see you. for other things its best for a cable release.
And don't forget that the infra red doesn't work from behind the camera, or so I'm told. I've got a wired one and have no problems with it. As mastertrinity says, depends on what you want to shoot!
I have found the little Canon IR jobbie even struggles to work from the front if you cannot get a direct line of sight to the sensor, which gets hidden behind the lens/hood.
