As a newbie I have just purchased my first proper DSLR a Nikon D90 with 18-105 (love it) having been bitten by the bug. Probably a daft question but I have noticed that SD cards vary in price considerably (as much as £75 for an 8 gig card) for similar capacity. So which are the best cards to use with this camera? do some perform better than others in terms of immage quality etc? & for exsample is it better to buy 2 x 4 gig cards as apposed to 1 x 8 gig card etc. thanks. Marc.

look out for the 'class' rating - the higher the class the faster the card. A couple of experiences too, I have Kingston 8GB full size class 6 SDHC which works fine in my G10 and 500D, but an unbranded 8GB gives errors in the G10 but is fine in the 500D even on multiple shots.

The price difference comes down to write/read speed, which will determine how quickly your buffer will clear and allow you to start shooting again.

I have an Ultra II in my D90 and have no problem shooting a dozen RAW frames and then being able to shoot again in 3-4 seconds with the full buffer available.

watch out for fakes with sandisk stuff, been a few reports of small cards (256mb for example) being sold as 2Gb cards etc.

I have some Transcend cards, they are cheap and seem fine even when on continuous shooting..

Depending on your budget SanDisk Ultra II which is Class 4 I believe or the new Transcend class 6 range is well worth the money, the speed transfer rate is just as important on your card reader remember so don't blow extra money on a class 6 card if you only have a low rate transfer card reader like USB type 1 as your putting the cart before the horse so to speak
