Hi,

I need a second body to become a CPS member.

And before I buy one, was just wondering what would compliment my 5d MKII thats not to expensive and will allow me to use all my lenses
 
Another vote for a 5d mark I get one for around £600 saving about £1,000 rather than a mark II and have money for lenses :D
 
Do you shoot commercially? As in for payment? If not why do you want to join the CPS? Do you need to, or just want to?

If you need to - have you thought about what level of cover you'd want? and if so, have you checked the chart to see what is and isn't covered? That might help with your decision making.

For me though - if you use a 5dmk2 -I'd get another 5dmk2. That way, in the event of failure, you're picking up the same body, with the same buttons, same controls, same setup, so you can seamlessly carry on shooting. If you use a different body - under stress - you may be more likely to make mistakes, as the button layout (although similar) will be different, and performance may be different as well.. So choose wisely before you choose.. :)

I think you could be correct about another 5d
 
First choice would be another 5D2, if that's outside your budget range, then a 5D1.

The main reason for another identical body, as well as the ones stated above is all your lenses will be the same. You wouldn't need to think this lens would be 50mm on this and 80mm on that (7D).

At minimum, get another FF, going for a crop creates havoc when shooting. If you have a 24-70 on the FF, to get 70-200 covered on the other body (when shooting with 2 bodies) you will need the EF-S lens. Pain in the bum IMO, that lens then become useless on the 5D. You end up restricting yourself with your own gear. You want all your lenses to work on all the bodies.

That really depends whether you value the extra reach of the 70-200 on a crop. The 5dmkII has plenty of resolution to crop from 70 to make up for the small gap (70 to 112mm equivalent)
 
If you are getting a second body for the sake of having a spare in case the other one goes wrong and you are not doing paid work, it seems a little excessive. If you plan to carry both with 2 different focal lengths then it makes more sense. If you don't need the camera at present save the money until you do or spend it on lenses!

Cropped to make it like 70mm yes, but it is not its true field of vision.

It is a pain in the arse shooting 2 bodies in different crop factor, speaking from experience here.

Owner of 2 x FF and 1 cropped body.

More info please...I d like to know about this. I know the field of view changes, but given you have a 1.6 crop with a good vf (e.g. 7d) what are the drawbacks of using the crop for extra reach?
 
What's the point of extra reach when you can crop? Your words.

People are obesses with "reach"! Just use your feet. If one wants more reach he simply buy a single longer lens, don't need to buy a body and make everything cropped. Note that I said cropped, it's not more reach.

As for more info. A 24mm photo and a cropped 16mm will look different even though they are "the same".

A pretty weak argument. Things aren't as clear-cut as just buying a longer lens.

If I could, I'd stick with DX-format sensors over full-frame every day because I can get more from my long lenses and the cost to go wide is much lower.

However, because Nikon has dumped DX-format gripped, 'pro' bodies my only move it to get an D3 to get the same handling and feel. Yeah, there wil be an improvement in image quality but I know that I'll have to keep a DX body as back-up solely for long lens use when a 70-200mm (plus TC) just isn't long enough on FX. I could go out and get a 80-400 but A) it's a pap lens IMO, and B) it's more glass to lug around, being a behemoth of a lens. Plus the IQ is no comparison to a 70-200mm with a TC fitted.

Sometimes just buying a longer length lens isn't financially acheivable, I don't often have £5000+ spare in the bank for just another lens. Also, quite often, where I shoot mostly anyway, moving forwards is just impossible due to safety restrictions and legal restrictions. I don't think a judge would accept a plea "well, Raymond told me to get closer to get the photo" as I wandered all over the country's air bases. That's why I have a 5D2 and a 7D to play with.
