If its sunny outside, try 'S' and have it set at 1/200 or faster

Indoors is going to be tricky with your camera. If its anything like mine, low light and fast shutter speeds are a right pain in the arse.

Hi

As no one else as given you any advice yet I'll give a little.

I'm not familliar with the Fuji but basically you'll most probably be wanting to freeze the action.

It depends on what the lighting is like. If it's nice and sunny outdoors or even bright, your camera should have a fast enough shutter speed in Auto mode. If it's overcast the shutter speed in auto will slow down. If you have a shutter priority mode (TV) you can set a shutter speed between 1/500-1/1250 and allow the camera to increase the aperture or iso accordingly. But like I said if you're lucky with the weather you should be fine in Auto. Review a photo in the light and see what shutterspeed it used. Even on an overcast day iso400/500 should give you around 1/1000sec at F4.

Indoors is a completely different ball game. Unless you have a really fast lens you'll most like have to use flash

Well id try it in aperture, somewhere about 5.6 - 8 and see what shutter speed it gives you, if it starts to drop just up the iso a bit to give you somwhere aroung 125 or faster, as long as you keep focused it should give you some sharp images. Good luck.

I'd suggest the same as Escy, or just keep it in full auto mode.

I have the Fuji 9600 and wouldn’t really push the ISO up above 200. Set the aperture about 5.6 and keep the shutter speed at an absolute minimum of 125, (500+ would be better if you have enough light).

Also I would mount the camera on a tripod and pre-focus/frame the shot on the jump.

Does it have Ai Servo focussing? How about sport mode?

These cameras are ok but will never focus as fast or as accurately as a DSLR with a good lens hence my advice to pre-focus on the jump.

The 9600 has 3 settings for focus:
C-AF – continuous – moving subjects
S-AF – Single
M-AF – Manual – I wouldn’t use this as it is only really useful for macro

Use 'S' mode. If the horse is galloping you may need a speed of 1/500th to freeze the frame...test shots needed, between 250th and 500th
Higher the better check the aperture you get and keep that below or at 5.6
ISO..... no higher than 100. ISO 80 if light permits
F5.6 is the highest you'll ever need on that camera
I would use S-AF as continuous reduces battery life, i would pre-focus as said in last posting.
Also do some tests with metering mode as i wonder if you'd struggle with spot metering.

And dont use the live view, although i guess your not doing?
