Which starter DSLR? Newbie

Hi all,
Very new to photography, more accustomed to a point and shoot camera than a DSLR. But alas I wish to get into photography a bit more and I am looking at getting a cheapish used DSLR. I have seen canon 350D's for around the £200 along with Nikon D40's (occasionally).

The canon 350D is the one that seems to appeal to me more especially for the price, it seems a lot of camera for around £200. But....theres always a but lol, others are suggesting I look towards the Nikon D40.

Any help to decide would be great, or maybe an alternative for around the same money. Any opinions would be grateful along with any reason why I should avoid one over the other. :help:

Just looked through completed listings on ebay, they have been selling anywhere between £150 AND £250 on average, some body only some with 2 lenses and extras.
I was just working around the £200 figure.
 
I appreciate its old technology compared with the latest models but as I am starting out I don't want to spend a fortune. I paid £550 for my fuji back in 2003 and hardly ever used it. The fuji is slow to start up (really slow), it takes an age to autofocus even in good light and eats batteries for a hobby lol.

Really i'm looking for a camera where I can get some long exposures, works as well as it can in low light, good picture quality and something that is upgradable over time through new glass.

The canon 350D and the Nikon D40 seem to fit the bill, but the canon has AEB which seems the easier option for achieving HDR shots.
