As above really, which is the best option for maintaining IQ and AF speed?

You should get away with the 1.4 but id steer clear of the 2x
 
I currenty use a Kenko NC 7 x2 which gives very good results.

I used to have a kenko 1.4x with my old sigma 70-200 but I was never happy with it, sold it and bought a sigma 1.4x and found a world of difference, tracked fine in aiservo and quality was great.
 
I'm reading that the Nik TC's might not fit the siggy lens???
 
ah right - that will reduce the temptation to upset the missus again then!

My Kenko NC-7 was able to track F1 cars at full race speed no problem. That's on a Canon 50d mind, cant see what body the OP is using as on iPhone but I assume it's Nikon?
 
apologies all - yes this is on a Nikon D300
just assumed everyone used Nikon, cos, well ... why wouldn't you??? ;-P
 
I recently purchased the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM for my Canon 50D.
I also purchased the Kenko pro 300 1.4x tc & Kenko pro 300 2x tc.
After placing some tape over the first 3 pins on both units, the IQ & AF are both excellent.
The 1.4 is a little quicker & locks onto an object that little bit faster.
Generally, I am very happy with both purchases.

Why did you tape up the contacts?

Both TCs should focus as normal?

taping the contact is for lenses with tc thaa have a apature of bigger than f5.6 so the 70-200mm with a 2x on will be fine on any canon body, now if you wanted to put a 300f4 with a 2xtc on anything opther than a 1d series it willneed taping but will slow down the af.

Both TC's focused without issue but they would not go down to f2.8.
With the pins taped, the camera & lens does not think there is a TC involved.
 
It won't make a difference.

The lens can't physically give you f/2.8 when attached to a TC, all you're doing is confusing the body and giving you a false reading.
 
I've got a Kenko MC7 2x same as Jim's that I'm trying to swap for a 1.4x. It was brought for me as a present about 3 months ago and I've only got f4 lenses so it wont autofocus on them. I've tried it on a canon 70-200 f2.8 and it autofocuses perfectly. Just want a 1.4 though.
 
Taping the contacts might not be a good idea. It may well be that Canon have disabled AF outside certain parameters because the system goes unstable and may damage itself.
 
If the converter has only got 8 pins in total (5 block and 3 block) it's no use trying to tape any of it to retrieve AF. The taping only works with the 11 or 12 pin converters. It will work by taping but its definately not recommended as it then tends to lessen the life of the converter considerably. Not sure if its overheating (thats what I read) or not, but a friends converter just stopped working on AF even with f/2.8 lenses after 6 months or so.
