Which telephoto zoom?

So iv got a canon 60d and a sigma 17-50 2.8 and am now looking at getting a longer zoom with a budget of around £700 give or take a bit.

Been looking at sigma 70-200mm f2.8 ex os hsm, the canon 70-200 f4L is or possible something cheaper like the canon 70-300 is usm (or third party equivalent).

Most of the photos I take are of the kids playing/portraits or of days out to zoos etc so will be used/carried all day probably. I will also be using it at my brothers wedding soon (not as the photographer) but just to get a few more snaps for him.. aswell as the usual day out stuff with the kids (air shows etc), and as kids get older be sports days etc.

Does anyone have any experience with these lenses? Any recommendations etc? And I am far from a professional but do want a decent lens that I can keep for the foreseeable future.

Or even the canon 70-200 f4L non is to save a few quid and still get a decent built lens?

I've had the Canon 70-300IS and was pleased with it, got some good results and for the cost (especially 2nd hand for a good one) it's certainly worth a look if you need the 200-300 range...

If you are happy with the 200 range, the Canon 70-200F4 is a belter and absolutely worth it - I had one and loved it, there are times when I think about getting another one... The IS version is very nice, carries a price with it - so the decision is do you need / want the IS...

If you did decide to go for the non IS version and at some point upgraded to the IS or the F2.8 version, you'd be able to seek your F4 on for a minimal loss...

Yeah I'd probably buy used anyway so wouldn't be too bad if upgraded later. I had chance to get a non is f4 mint condition for 295 but unfortunately funds made me stop :(

The choice about IS seems to be the problem at minute. Just not sure if it will be necessary for such extra cost. Obviously it would be nice. I think all the photos will be outside during daylight but a few subjects will possibly be stationary at zoos etc but not like I'm gonna be doing literally non moving photos. There should be some sort of movement in all my shots. .. why can't the canon 70-200 2.8 is 2 be £500 haha...
 
Although the weight difference does make me think more towards the f4.

I had the non IS version and didn't really miss the IS and didn't feel at any time not having IS stopped me getting me the shot I was after - and saved me money.

Real shame you couldn't get that one for £295 as thats a great price for a good lens and you'd get virtually that back if you decided to sell it on in the future...
 
Yeah tell me about it. I was gutted.. yeah I think unless I can possibly get the IS or the 70-300L for a great price it will probably be the non is as hear nothing but good news and the lower weight over the 2.8s is a massive pro for me.

I think even 2nd hand, you'll be stretching your budget of £700 to get the 70-300L lens...

As I said, I was very pleased with my 70-200F4 and would (and have) certainly recommended one ...
