Which Tripod Head?

Hi,

First post on the forum.

I am looking to buy a new tripod and the choice of tripod is quite straightforward but the head, I just don't know which one to get.

I want it for landscape and astrophotography, but really an all-rounder.

I liked the Manfrotto 3 way head, but then found out it only tilts back 30 degrees.

So I think my choice is a ball head or a video type pan head with a single arm Both of which go back 90 degrees. But which one?

Can the main Manfrotto ball heads handle the weight of a Canon 550D and lens ok?

Which do you prefer?

Welcome to the forum Daniel.

If landscape etc is your thing, you may be better with a 3 way head, as you can adjust each axis independently.

Most ballheads will carry your gear. I use Redsnapper rsh 12, a bargain at £50. However when you release the tension the camera is free to move in all axis. This may be a pain when setting up a landscape or astro pic.
 
Canon 550d doesn't weigh much so that's no problem. Most manfrotto tripod can hold up over 4kg of gear.

Depends what you want. I would get ball head as it's easier to move all 3 axis but less precision.
