Hi,
I'm looking for another tripod head for my manfrotto legs.
I currently use the 498RC2 but the droop makes fine tuning an exercise in frustration.
I'm looking for a replacement to counter this specifically for indoor studio still life.
It needs to hold 2.5Kg of gear.
I'm looking around the £100 mark.

A provisional scan has turned up
1 - Manfrotto junior gear 410
2 - Manfrotto XPro 3 way head

Could anyone comment on the pros and cons of either style, or perhaps any alternative to consider?

I use a 410 geared head when I need a very accurate position to be held. Using the axis release knobs, I reckon it's as quick to set up ACCURATELY as the 322 trigger type head I use for less precise uses. It's probably a bit over the £100 budget but worth it and you may find one second hand at Mifsuds, Ffordes or MPB.
 
I agree w/ the 410Jr... a geared head is the best for still life work, and the 410Jr is about as cheap as your going to get one. I started w/ the 410 until recently upgrading to the 405 (overkill for your needs I think).
I hate Manfrotto's proprietary plates, so I just attached an Arca Swiss clamp to the plate on my 405.

I have a 405 head its the dogs b*****ks granted a bit over budget, the 410 is great
 
I've found out the hard way just buy the best you can afford then you won't need to upgrade.
 
I have found a few heads and found that the problem is often that the plate is too small to get a good grip on the camera base, particularly in portrait mode. I now use a Manfrotto 808RC4 which has a decent size plate and is very rigid without and droop in either portrait or landscape modes. I have used it most days for about 4 years with no issues at all.

I also have a Super Pro head but it is a lot heavier and the not noticeably stiffer.
