both good tripods

have a search round the net for reviews at various websites

however 'generally' most cash= better tripod

landscapes..get a solid as you can...i use an old but solid Manfrotto 095

close-up/low down = consider a centre column which inverts

many peoples prefer a ball-head - i shoot mainly landscapes and use a 3-way Giottos 5001 head

How about the Manfrotto 055, if the new ones are as good as my ages old one you won't go far wrong, think they are a bit more solid than the 190

Strangely enough I have an all singing ballhead, but have been using the same 3 way head as John (Giottos 5001) not as compact with the sticky out bits, but locks rock solid and a bargain price too
 
+1 for the Manfrotto 055, it may be old, but it is a great solid tripod that will keep your camera still for long exposures. I also prefer the 3 way heads as opposed to the ball type.

just checked - the present Manfrotto is a 290

bought from Ffordes who sometimes has quality tripods at good prices

the MH5001 has a good feature - either of the actuating handles unscrews and the screws into the OTHER handle to make the head more compact for traveling..................:thumbs:
 
i started off with a MN115 3-way head from Ffordes

cheap as chips, and rock-solid

thanks for the info i looked at the 055 pro it would probably be better but as im skint im going for the 190xb
 
Think carefully before buying. The 190s are quite small. The maximum height (without centre column extended) is 48 inches.

I have just gone through all of this with a friend who is 5 feet 1. We went into Jacobs and Jessops yesterday with the intention of buying a 190 and she ended up buing a 055 because the 190 was just too small.

I have the 055 tripod and its solid as rock, but I was looking for something smaller and lighter so looked at the 190 and to get it to eye height I would have to extend the centre which could possibly give some movement

What is the obsession with height and tripods? I'm 6'2" and a 190 is plenty tall enough.. for the way I shoot. I've never thought to myself, "this shot would be improved by having the camera a little higher".

I know it's easier on the back matching tripod height to user height, but that's introducing a compromise to composition based on the height of the photographer!

The advantage of the 190xprob is the flexibility the horizontal arm offers when you want to get the camera really low down.

You don't just need to think about the base height, you need to think about how you want to use the tripod. And then relate that back to the base height, weight and other characteristics.

i skint hence why im using the vouchers for jessops , so carnt buy second hand

but im now looking at the 055

you think this would be easy its only to hold the camera steady god i have been looking for 2 -3 nights and im no better off

Alastair,

The reason I mentioned height is to give options. A 055 can be lowered. A 190 can't be raised to the 055s height.

For my shooting I need a tall tripod

As is often said extending the centre column means you have a expensive and heavy monopod, so try to get the required height without using it
