Which WA lens/zoom for you MKIV

Hi

As the title says

Im considering selling my FF gear but my only concern is what wide angle lens would I replace my 16-35 with if I sold the 5d2....

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you can use the newer 10-20mm f/3.5 on APS-H as well but you will have some serious vignetting till about 12mm.

I had a 12-24 and my copy suffered extreme softness down the right side, had read a few reports of issues, seems like a good lens if you can find a good copy.

Was it decentered? Did you return it or send it to Sigma for servicing?

I picked it up second hand, it could tell it was old, I decided to trade it in for a different lens in the end.

One plus point was the barrel distortion was very minimal on this lens.

I love the wide end of the 16-35 on my 5d2 and would like something similar for the 1.3 crop of the MKiv...Not having been down this avenue before makes me a little unsure about selling the 5d2.
 
I ended up getting the Tokina 11-16mm for my 1D MKIV. Apparently it does vignette from 11-13 but after that it's fine. Should be here this week so I'll let you know.

Looked at the tokina 12-24 and the sigma, but I wanted something a bit faster
 
The Sigma 12-24 EX DG is a fantastic lens if you get a good one.

I would suggest either going and trying it out before you buy or buying a UK stock version so you can return it to Sigma if not happy for recalibration.

I have always regretted getting rid of mine and on my 5DMk2 it produced images like these and on my original 5D it produced these.

Bearing in mind most of these were at 12mm on FF (mind blowingly wide) then on a 1.25x crop as the 1Dmk4 actually is you will get even less distortion and vignetting and an approx focal length AOV of about 15mm.

I'm in the position at the moment where I can cover nearly all photographic requirments, but I have kit sitting around doing nothing sometimes, I keep looking at it and thinking when will I use it next, This then gets me thinking of what Im spending most of the time doing and whether I should just concentrate on that area or remain in the positon to be able to cater for all aspects.

Very frustrating...

That sounds interesting Olly...What were you using before ?
 
I had the Canon 10-22mm on my 7D....it was the perfect setup really. Its a bit of a gamble and I might have to settle for a 12-24 slower lens but I thought I would see how this works out :)

I read this link and made my mind up :)

patience isn't my strong point either, but I'll just have to wait :)

I certainly will post my experience with it :)
 
lens is here sitting on my desk at work....will have to wait until tonight before I can try it..grrrrrrrrrr

I'm currently using Tokina 12-24mm on 1Ds and 1D. Presuming you want a perfect 2x3 ratio output it is OK down to 18/19mm (effectively used as 20mm prime) and to about 15mm, respectively. If you crop to 5x7 or 8x10 you could go a bit wider. It is surprisingly sharp at f/4 and peaks at 5.6. It also has filter thread as a bonus.

I appreciate 15-24mm and 16-35mm are rather close, and will be going the Canon route myself to get the -35mm or -40mm option in one lens and a weather seal for seaside work.

OK, my impressions and results. My impressions are better than expected. Even at 11mm you could probably crop out the vignette. Nice and sharp lens too...very happy purchase.

certainly will, once the weather changes !! I might find something suitable indoors in the meantime :)
 
Did you take these using any filter or a hood? I found removing those can help to gain 1-2mm with clean corners.
