Which wide angle lens for a 600D?

I've got a Sigma 18-250 and a Sigma 150-500 so all I seem to be missing is a wide angle lens.

The Canon 10-22 is a little out of my price range and the reviews appear to favour the Sigma 10-20 and the Tokina 11-16 anyway.

Anyone care to offer an opinion or alternative?
 
Cant knock the tokina 11-16, great sharp lens
 
And there lies the problem: the Tokina is significantly more expensive than the Sigma, but the Sigma isn't as sharp as the Tokina (reports of chromatic aberration across the image?).

Well if you are planning on making A3 size prints from 100% crops of the extreme corners of the image then that might (just might) be an issue :naughty:
However I would be very surprised if anyone could point out any issues on say a 10x12 print and categorically say that one was the sigma and one the tokina. I have lots of great prints from my siggy and I cant see any significant CA.
Without sounding disparaging (and I'm really not :love:) your main lens seems to be the Sigma 18-250 and if you are content with the images that produces (and there should be no reason why you are not) then the 10-20 is a far superior lens for image quality than that one. I always make a huge point not to pixel peep any of my lenses. If the images look sharp and print sharp I'm happy. Read this and in particular look at the final comparisons and the magnified corner thingummy bob. The IQ differences on all these lenses are minscule.

Thanks for the comments. I had read the review you referenced, along with quite a few others. The problem is that you can never really tell how honest(!) or 'picky' a reviewer is. They contradict each other too often for there to be too much semblance of consistency. Hence my request for comments from 'real' users here to try to make sense of the 'just how sharp is the Tokina' v 'just how much CA is there in the Sigma' v 'is the difference in cost worth it' issues.

As you say, I am pleased with my 18-250 though, no doubt, I'd be even more pleased with another lens that I had had to throw the full bucket of cash at. With all that in mind, I've decided, with the help of your and other contributions here, that I should go for the Sigma. The difference between the two lenses doesn't appear to warrant an almost 50% increase in cost.
 
A well reasoned and sensible conclusion. I am sure you will love your new lens. A super wide angle lens is a revelation the first time you use it. You're going to have a lot of fun, enjoy.

Really? I doubt if there are many, if any, proper reviews (i.e., written by people who've actually used the lenses) that reach that conclusion.

I first tried the Sigma 10-20 and I gave up when I found it impossible to get both sides of an image in focus at the same time. This is, apparently, not uncommon with this lens.

I then tried a 10-22 and it was fantastic. However, I kept reading about how wonderful the Tokina 11-16 was - so I bought one. And was terribly disappointed. Its flare handling, compared to the Canon, is just awful. The chromatic aberration is also worse.

The only advantage of the 11-16 is the f2.8 aperture. Most of the time that's not important, but for wide-field astronomy pics it's a real boon. And that's the only reason I kept it. For anything outside in the daytime the Canon is just unbeatable.
 
I've the Sigma 10-20mm and really like it, I couldn't afford / justify the extra money for the Canon when I bought mine, but I've not been disappointed with it and would happily recommend one.
 
I think that is the point , no one doubts the quality of the Canon but at nearly twice the price it's just not twice as good for most work. Large super critical commercial work ? Maybe but for the average user perhaps not.

It depends on how keen the 'average user' is on not having to worry about huge green blobs on their images whenever they shoot a sunny day (or moony night).

As usual I am the worlds worst sceptic, so I went back and looked at a couple of random shots taken with my Sigma 10-20 and would you believe it ! you are absolutely right Hollis :eek: I really need to check my shots better.

I'm putting my coat on as we speak and its off to the shops I go to buy my Canon 10-22. :thumbs:

Anyone interested in a Sigma 10-20 wideangle? its like new, light use by an "average user". Offers ? :naughty: ;)





 
I too own/use a Sigma 10-20mm a superb WA lens, gets my vote everytime

I have the canon 10-22 and can't fault it. I've not had either the sigma or tokina so I couldn't comment I'm afraid!
 
Must be okay on a Sony body then Les. :shrug: :naughty: (Nice shot btw sometimes its worth not waiting for people to get out of the shot)

Thank you and yes they do work well on Sony ( the only DSLR to have) and I left the people in shot to give a sense of scale, just like your fisherman :lol::lol:

Not seen any reviews that rate the Sigma or Tokina above the Canon. The 10-22 is one of the most accomplished lenses Canon make.

My preference would be;

1 canon, 2 Tokina, 3 Sigma.

All three lenses are gems though so if budget is restrictive or a deciding point go for the best deal you can get.
