hi,
can anyone recommend a fairly inexpensive wide angle lens for my 40D please.......how do they compare.....what do you use.....thanks..

I had a 40D until recently and on the front I stuck a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens

Amazing

Build quality is superb
Great shots at 10mm - I love the ultra-wide stuff - but remember on a 40D with a crop factor of 1.6x 10mm 35mm equiv is actually 16mm. You cannot use this lens on a Full Frame sensor either.

They have replaced this lens with a faster version which is more money but f4 was fine for the landscape stuff I did.

Here are some of my shots - feel free to have a nosey

Another  for the Sigma 10-20, would like to try the Canon, but much more expensive than the Sigma and for the times I use it, not worth the extra investment.

once again another vote for the sigma 10-20, great lens. i would like to keep my one but am going full frame so cant :( you wont regret getting the sigma over a canon

The Tokina 12-24mm f4 is much sharper if you do not care much about the 10-12mm range

Review:
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/tokina_12-24_4_n15/page4.asp

Conclusion:
"it comprehensively outperforms the other third party APS-C wideangle zooms we've tested recently, i.e. the Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM and the Tamron 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di-II. It's simply a much sharper lens, especially wide open, delivering consistently good results at almost all settings; it also scores well with respect to its distortion and falloff characteristics. These characteristics, coupled with the constant F4 maximum aperture, makes it much better suited to shooting interiors or in low light than similar lenses (with the exception of Tokina's own 11-16mm F2.8), adding to its overall versatility. This from an extremely solid, well-built lens which feels like it would shrug off knocks capable of breaking less rugged designs, and which also has excellent operational characteristics; the zoom and focus rings are impressively smooth, and the focus clutch system is one of the better-implemented of its kind."

And yes, I have one :) :) :)

I've the Canon 10-22mm and it's a truly awesome lens.

+1 for the Canon 10-22 (I use it on my 40D).
If it fits the budget, it's a really excellent lens.

Mike

I'd recommend the under-rated Tamron 11-18. It needs careful use to get the best sharpness out of it, and I think the sigma and canon equivalents will probably be sharper, but there's one for sale for £175 posted which is about as cheap as you'll get for an UWA!

Hi Keith
I have the Canon 10-22mm which is a great lens, but your post was for an inexpensive wide angle. I think if I was looking for an inexpensive wide angle now I would go for a used Sigma.
Have you tried any lenses? Maybe drop into a store over xmas and try the Canon, Sigma and Tokina?

hi alan,
thanks for the reply, no i haven't tried any of these lenses but i may consider your suggestion and go and do just that, i've never actually done this before (or even thought of it to be honest) so thanks for the idea....

Don't forget the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 as well. It has a nice wide aperture, built like a tank and supersharp.

+1 for Tokina 12-24
I use this on my 40d and love the sharpness and solid feel. The best lens in my bag.

another vote for the tonika 12-24, gorgeous lens, very sharp, and good colour rendition :) when i first got it i was worried that id want the 10mm of the sigma... but to be honest, i rarely go down that low, usually around the 20-24 mark for my shots :)
