Getting a 30D body as a backup or getting a wide angle lens to add to my collection? I was set on the lens, but seeing peoples' 40Ds seem to be going down all over the place, I am now thinking a spare body for now might be the wisest choice?

Are they packing up more than anything else?
 
I'll take the camera and glass verses 2 cameras and no glass.
Seriously though, the world won't end if you're only body packs in, unless you earn a living using it.
 
Since I don't make a living out of photography, I hold back buying a 2nd body until I have to (which is when the one at hand breaks down and is sent off for service) and then I buy whatever I can afford while the one at hand is being repaird.

Of course, it's easy for me to say that as I've got a few bodies hanging around the house ... but seriously, get the glass .... bodies, you'll always find one at a bargain. Just today I saw, at Jessops, a D80 body for £380!! It's their demo model .. what a bargain I thought, and it was hard to resist at that price.
 
Just I would not be happy having to be without a camera for weeks and weeks, and I think the warranty that came with mine is a USA one.
 
Buy a 30d body now for £300 private sale, or buy one for the same money or less when you need one ? A 20d can be picked up for just over £200 nowadays, 30d will be at that money in 12-15 months.

Buy the glass !

Lens, any day of the week.
Canon's turnaround time is about 3 weeks, give or take.
I can understand having a backup body if you earn a living from it, or use them at events where changing between a wide angle and a telephoto would cause you to miss valuable shots, but not if the only reason you want one is so that you can have something to do for 3 weeks while your camera is being repaired.

IF I assume correctly I will say you currently have a 40D? Go with the lens but make it worhwhile and go L ...do research the specific lens well before you buy it
 
I would go with the lens as it is a hoby and not a job. As like other shave said you can pick a body up for not a lot of dosh as and when the need (hope it never) arises.

I am in the (un)lucky position of having the 40d as ine and a 400d for the wife but she is getting into it more now and is pestering moe for some decent lenses, but if push came to shove I could always use her body.

Ok, lens it will be then, now to just decide between a 10-20mm sigma, 17-40 L and Tokina 12-24. My budget is really only about £400/£450 or thereabouts.

As to the backup body, well no, I am not currently doing it as a profession, but as said in several other threads, was asked to work in someone's studio. But he will have a camera there setup anyway...a fuji pro S5 ( unfortunately )
 
Fuji S5 ?, why unfortunately, fablious camera, I'd take that for what it is, great experience with another brand you might not normally encounter.
The thing with the breakdowns is....I've never had a single issue with the 4 body's I've owned, breakdowns just appear to be a regular occurrences because nobody posts threads about their camera's not breaking...©copyright joxby 2008..
I'm sure the percentage of duffers is very small compared with units sold.

I have Sigma lenses and very good they are too but my Tokina 12-24 is a gem I think so don't rule it out to quickly G ;)

Yes the Tokina was my original choice, actually :) how bad is the aberration etc on it and distortion at certain lengths?
 
I'd go for the lens any time! Unless all/most of your lenses are cropped sensor specific you could always get a film EOS as a back up, they can be had on eBay for not very much at all! And shooting film is fun!
 
From a build quality point of view I'd go for the Tokina - the Sigma seems weel enough built (I have one) but Tokina stuff feels almost bullet proof in comparison.

If you are worried about not having a camera what about a G9 as a back up? That way you'd also have something you could carry about when taking the 40D is practical
 
I would probably bought the Tokina if my dealer had had it in a Nikon fit (the only had a Canon one) as it just felt so much better built, but I could get the Sigma that day, so the Sigma it was:D
